Food: pretty decent. Fresh ciabatta bread on my veggie egg sandwich is excellent. The sandwich itself sort of bland. Had black brewed coffee, it was fine but not exceptional.

Customer service: my server was great, but very weird and confusing experience with the host. I am a solo traveler. Was told I couldn’t be seated on the outdoor patio as a party of 1, but rather could only sit inside or take my food to go. I had come early and told the host I didn’t mind waiting for a table. Initially the host didn’t express any concern with seating me outdoors if I waited. Then, two larger parties arrived behind me who came much later than me. At that point the tune changed and he was seemingly more concerned about seating them rather than me (although the other parties actually ended up being fine with sitting inside).

I continued to wait patiently, repeating that I would like to sit anywhere open air and enjoy my breakfast on a table. Eventually, as I was starting to get visibly emotional / frustrated because I had been waiting for a long time, a table opened up next to a large window and I was seated there. No apologies or explanation.

I don’t know what that was all about. I can’t say that it was a communication issue because the host spoke English well. Overall a very confusing experience and I’m not sure if they have a policy of not seating parties of one outside — which would be odd but also could be made more clear from...

This place is so aesthetically pleasing and has a busy, cool vibe atmosphere that is typical of Puerto Viejo and a sure sign of a good bakery, breakfast cafe. We picked up a few things for the road, a pistachio croissant, chocolate croissant a chocolate cannoli looking pastry and two lavish donut sandwich looking things, one strawberry with cream and one chocolate. She literally just brought them out of the kitchen and were super fresh. I’m usually not a desert person but we all (5 of us) had a bite of each of them and my teens had a great time doing a full vlog analysis. They were absolutely delicious and a perfect sugar rush (without being too sweet) for the long drive, that I made it to La Fortuna without stopping. Lol. The croissants were flaky, airy and were even better than ones I’ve had in France. The strawberry and cream donut sandwich was so delicious without being too rich. A must Visit place in my books and I’ll be sure to do a sit down breakfast the next time I’m in Puerto Viejo. Fantastic job Eduardo and team!!...

every time i go there we get the vegan sandwich. it’s amazing, don’t get me wrong, but every time we leave this place we feel embarrassed and upset. the lady who always takes our order, not sure her name, she’s just tall and has curly red-ish hair, always says something rude to us! the first time we ordered the gluten free vegan sandwich she said in a snotty way “sounds like your sick or something”. who says that? that same day, the cooks put cheese on our sandwich after we said VEGAN and we politely asked her to fix it and she rolled her eyes and walked back to the kitchen. the second and LAST time, she got mad at my boyfriend for standing at the check out line when he ordered instead of standing at the “order here” line and she snatched the menu out of his hands after he ordered and gave him major attitude. it’s sad, because we are really nice easy going people. i don’t like writing a bad review but we are returning customers and i’m sad that we won’t go there anymore because she makes us feel bad...

We fell in love with this place from the get-go. Situated at the east end of town, we would stop in every morning on the days we bicycled to Manzanillo. We’d enjoy a great cup of coffee, and usually take-out some savouries for snacks at the beach throughout the day. The staff is super friendly and helpful, even during the hectic times when they were dealing with line-ups for tables as well as at the counter. On the days that we had a bit more time we’d enjoy their full, sit-down breakfasts. They make really delicious waffles, but the hands-down star attraction is their killer French Toast. This treat is a must-have at De Gustibus. Another treat is their bread. Whenever it wasn’t sold out (and that was often because everyone loved it as much as we did) we’d pick up a loaf and take it home - so good. Oh, and not surprisingly their sweet desserts are fabulous as well. These folks deserve the stellar rating - highly recommended!

5 stars for Degustibus because without a doubt, they are the best bakery + restaurant in Puerto Viejo. They open bright and early and start displaying their fresh sausage and ricotta stuffed mini calzones, assortment of custard (pistachio!) or chocolate filled croissants, fresh pastries, and various breads like a big slice of prepared focaccia that sometimes are topped with caramelized onions and rosemary or green olives - for only 1,000 colones this is a major score! You can grab and go with a drip (percolado) or espresso coffee or grab a seat indoors or in their patio area for full service with attentive waitstaff. Just had the French toast this weekend and not only was I pleasantly surprised by this unique, crunchy, cinnamony, buttery version, but it came with real maple and 8 pieces.. just enough where mom and I almost didn't argue about who got the last piece ☺️👌🏼
