Do you like adventures, believe on pirates and are willing to get out of your comfort zone, if so...Puerto Viejo is the right choice for you.
I had the opportunity to visit this Caribbean coast with great friends who love to do crazy things, meaning climbing on shipwrecks and getting on a swing over the ocean. I did something like that in Cancun Mexico and visited the Bahamas but never ever in my life would have imagined that Costa Rica could offer the same beauty for a much lower price tag.
Puerto Viejo de Talamanca in the province of Limón ( Atlantic Coast) is an old town loaded with shipwrecks alongside the seashore. Each one of them is painted with beautiful graffities which make them extremely attractive for picture taking due to their colorful designs.

Puerto Viejo is for the lazy-day adventurer and for those that want to spend the whole day at th beach doing nothing. Calmer water, shallow beaches (in spots) for the little ones. I loved it here so much that I came back after a visit to Limon in between. Rented a bike for the week (18,000 colones / $35.57) and rode down to Cocles, did my store shopping, or just moseyed along.
See my other reviews on local spots...
