If you’ve spent any real time in Puerto Viejo, then chances are someone has already told you, “You have to go to Bread What What.” And if they haven’t? Let me be that person for you. I’ve been coming here for the past three years, and I can say with confidence: this is a must-stop spot for breakfast or lunch.
What I love most about Bread What What is how it meets you exactly where you are. Not sure what you’re in the mood for when you wake up? No problem. This place is a choose-your-own-adventure of craveable comfort and unexpected flavor. Sometimes I’m in a sweet mood and order the New York bagel—loaded with cream cheese and blueberry jam. That combo? Fire. And they don’t skimp—you get fresh fruit, bacon, and eggs on the side. (Pro tip: I get the eggs separate so I can douse them in my hot sauce. Balance.)
But that’s just one breakfast. I’ve had the pancakes, the French toast, the waffles… honestly, I’ve had so many dishes I’ve lost count. And my boyfriend is loyal to their gallo pinto (especially the burrito version). The variety here is wild—whether you’re in the mood for something traditional, tropical, or just indulgent, Bread What What delivers.
Let’s talk drinks. The smoothies here are worth a whole review of their own. My boyfriend always gets the Charger—banana, chocolate, and peanut butter in a cold, creamy blend that’s basically dessert-for-breakfast but still feels justifiable. I’m a Dragon Fire loyalist—dragon fruit and vanilla, blended into a drink so gorgeous it feels like you’re sipping a sunrise.
It’s not just about the food, though. It’s the vibe. It’s the freshness, the presentation, the generosity of every plate, and the feeling that your day just got better because you started it here. I’m working on digging up years of food photos because this place deserves a full photo dump—so stay tuned for that.
To anyone visiting Puerto Viejo: do yourself a favor and come hungry to Bread What What. To the staff and cooks: thank you for feeding me with such care and consistency for years. You’ve become part of our rhythm and routine, and every bite...
Read moreThis is my new favorite breakfast place. I love their food. The food is presented beautifully, there's a lot of it. I got the sampler platter which was one egg, one strip of bacon, one piece of French toast, and one pancake. With fruit. It was $11 it was gorgeous I ate half of it and I was stuffed everything on the plate was fantastic. My husband got The eggs and toast platter which came with bacon and sausage as well. It is the best place in town for an iced chai tea latte. They do cold coffee really well in Puerto Viejo. So far I've only found two or three places that do iced chai tea lattes. This is the only place that I found that doesn't blended. They this is not chai liquid flavoring. This is a real-made chai tea. The spices are still in it as it's been blended. You can taste the anise, the cardamom it's amazing.... I cannot say enough about this place it was delish I've been there twice now and I can't wait to go back.
Also we did not order the fruit plate but someone next to us did... And it looked like a meal unto itself. It was beautifully presented and it was huge. It looks...
Read moreI would give a million stars if I could! My friend and I have visited 3 times in the past 4 days and will be heading there again tomorrow.
They are flexible with taking special orders. We have had juice, lemonade, lattes, fruit plates, eggs, bacon, plantains, pinto beans, crepes, rice bowls, etc. Everything has exceeded our expectations. All of the servers are wonderful and friendly. You can tell they are happy to work there. They are very accommodating - I didn’t drink all of my lemonade today and they gave me a cup to take home.
The location and Atmosphere are absolutely perfect. It is in a convenient spot along the main road. The music is lovely and there is so much character. You can take a short walk to a beautiful beach where you can find crabs and all sorts of ocean life. The water was WARM there - I have never experienced...
