Second morning at Cusco we visited The Cathedral of Cusco, located next to the Plaza de Armas. This church is one of the oldest ones in South America, it took nearly 100 years to complete building and was built on top of the old Inca Palace, which is very intriguing. The famous "Last Supper" painting is placed inside of the church, there are many versions of this painting, but this one is very unique. The local specialty roasted guinea pig is right in the center of the table, and other local produce is also on the table. Our local guide explained how Christianity was accepted by Quechua people with Inca culture, the Lady Rose was close figure to the mother of the earth in the Inca religion, and more acceptable by Inca people. There are also special features in the church, such as 13 private Charpel of local nobles, the location of choir, the mirrors to help spread the mission, they all have stories. No photos are allowed inside of the church.

A most splendid mix of origins, functions and styles! At first glance, the Catedral del Cuzco just seems to be one of South America's many colonial churches. However, the opposite is true. An Inca fortress forms the foundation of the cathedral, the building itself is mainly built in the Renaissance style (construction period: 1560-1654) and the interior is Baroque. The cathedral still functions as a church, but the precious and sometimes unique interior also makes it a museum. Zapata's "Last Supper" with a guinea pig as a main dish and the black Christ crucifix known as "Nuestro Señor de Los Tremblores" are two of the cathedral's best-known art treasures. The doors in the transept give access to the two churches adjacent to the cathedral: on the left the Sagrada Familia and on the right the Iglesia del Triunfo (the first Christian church in Cuzco). All in all, the Catedral del Cuzco is a unique mix that you should not miss!

At about S./25 (or roughly $6.50 USD) the Cusco Cathedral is a bit steep in price, but looming beautifully and oppressively over the plaza, it's a hard sell to not stop in. In a beautiful Spanish Gothic Renaissance architecture, the building boasts a lot of really wonderful art, the most famous of all being the Last Supper (1753) by Marcos Zapata that features Jesus and the Apostles eating a Chinchilla for dinner. We went right after Corpus Christi which was a real treat because all of the various pueblos had their costumes and regalia on display. Well worth a visit, enter through the doors on the southeast side. No pictures are allowed which helps create a spiritual and intimate experience in such a massive building.

Looking at the cathedral makes you feel that you are in Europe. This as all the other cathedrals was built over an Inca Temple. We came here as part of a walking tour. The interior is very pretty and some part of it was gilded wood. There are huge paintings inside the church that show the native take on the Spaniards and a native flair on Infant Jesus, Mother Mary as well as the Last Supper. I specially was fascinated to learn that the Spaniards purposefully reflected light inside the church to imply that the sun god is now inside the church. This seemed to attract the natives to convert to Catholicism. No pics allowed inside. Must visit.
