Dnes muzeum zahrnuje kromě bohaté knihovny tři sbírková oddělení, přírodovědecké, historické (a archeologické) a uměleckohistorické.
The impressive museum building was built between 1897 and 1898 according to the design by the Berlin architect Hans Griesbach, who reworked the plans of Professor Ohman from Prague, whose design was originally chosen by a jury, but who was unable to complete the project in time. The building was completed by the company of the Miksch builders of Liberec.
The North Czech Museum in Liberec is one of the largest museums in the Czech Republic. It was founded in 1873 as an art museum and it is the oldest museum of its kind in the Czech. With regard to the local traditions of Northern Bohemia, the greatest attention was paid to glass and textiles. Today the museum includes, in addition to a rich library, three collection departments, natural sciences, historical (and archaeological) and art history.
From the beginning of February 2018 until November 2019 it is unfortunately closed due to extensive reconstruction and modernization of expositions to the public. Modernization will include a new exhibition of arts and crafts, which will be placed in one whole floor of the museum. Visitors can see their development during individual periods, from antiquity to the Middle Ages, Renaissance and Baroque to...
Read moreA museum with a broad range of exhibitions. Almost anyone should find something interesting. On the other hand, it means that any single thing that interests you will leave you wanting some more.
The entry is free. You only pay to climb the tower (100 czk in 2024). You're encouraged to leave a donation, though.
Given the above, visiting is a real bargain.
The museum is located in a building from the end of the 19th century, and that itself is a treat. It's like a small maze you can explore on your own. Getting to the backyard and open terrace are cool options, too. Especially if you need a break.
The view from the tower is nice, although the building is in the lower part of the city, so don't expect a bird view at...
Read moreIn my opinion definitely the best museum experience in Czech Republic right now. The entrance fee is voluntary, there is a great mix of differently oriented expositions and all of them are modern and interactive. My favourite exposition is the music oriented, you can try a lot of historical instruments there, the staff is also super-helpful when you don't understand how to play the instruments. The building is an architectonical wonder, would also recommend visiting the tower for a small entrance fee (50 Kč), there is a great view of the...
