Quito’s hilly terrain offers scenic views from just about every vantage point, but the panoramic vista you’ll enjoy from El Panecillo makes a trip to the summit a must-do experience. Named after the Spanish bread panecillo, the hill is located in the south-central section of the city, providing expansive views from every side. While it’s possible to climb to the top of El Panecillo, most visitors prefer taking a taxi. A large statue of the Virgin Mary adorns the summit. Made from 7,000 pieces of aluminum, it’s notable for showing the Virgin with wings. This type of portrayal is popular throughout the northern Andes. Great place to visit on a clear day. Views for miles! There are jewelry vendors up top that will custom make a ring for $5. It’s also beautiful at night but you have to be cautious because of potential dangers from opportunistic people. Take a cab or Uber up there! Remember on the top is low cellphone coverage! The view at night is amazing! Go up to the monument, it’s a well spend dollar. From the historical Panecillo hill you can view the entire city, Quito's modern North and its massive South. There are layers of history here dating back to the Incans, but the current attraction aside from the view, is the Statue of Liberty style (not size) Virgin statue. For $1 it is possible to go inside and view historical as well as religious images, but the best part is the wrap around deck at the foot...
Read moreBeautiful view the only hard part is trying to get to that place. We took a taxi and in the way up you can see the whole city. We paid about 1 dollar to go to the top of the statue which is magestic. For what I see the authorities there don't really care about taking care of the way up or down to that place. Once you get there you may see a little market where you can buy souvenirs and if you want some food. The weird part in Ecuador is the ladies at the door of the bathrooms asking 20 cents in order to use the public bathrooms. The old lady even got upset with me for asking her why do we have to pay those cents. It was only a question but she got very sensitive about it. Anyway the place is beautiful.
Read moreNestled in the Historic Center of Quito, El Panecillo is a very interesting place, truly an architectural jewel of the city. A place to spend the day with beautiful, clean and well-kept public areas to have a picnic with friends and family. It has public restrooms, small shops for snacks and small shops to buy a souvenir from there, in addition to many religious things. You can take some great photos both during the day and at night, during the day you can see the city in miniature by the height of the site and at night you can see it completely lit up. The imposing Virgin of the Panecillo giving her blessing as Mother of God to her people, a beautiful work sculpted by man. An anecdote that I heard from Quiteños is that the Virgin looks north, turning her back to the south and they said: The south is so ugly that even the Virgin turns...
