GOOD: Our hosts, Clau & Rolly, were amazing people! They introduced and explained everything we needed to know about the our suite including warnings about the alarm, occasional power outages, and the surrounding area. Clau & Rolly were easy to reach via whatsapp. They were also very knowledgeable about Quito history and gave us a ton of suggestions for different activities because they were also in tourism business for a long time. Our Wantara suite was beautiful, safe, comfortable, and very close to the old town center area (15 min walk). The suite came with a small garden full of herbs that we were able to pick and use. There was a free complementary beer and $12 wine bottles. There was also a chimney/fire place, that came with free wood we used and made the whole place a little warmer. Our kitchen was stocked everything we needed for cooking, coffee machine, French press, spices, paper towels, knives, dishware and more. The bedroom was also very cozy and our bed was comfortable and clean. The whole place was beautiful and very well worth the price.
BAD: The security alarm was a little bit annoying to deal with. Because of the dry seasons, the city implements scheduled power outages. When the power comes back, it activates the alarm. It was not too loud but loud enough to wake us. We had to take turns to shut it off every night (-1 star). We got locked out one time because of the power outage and someone closing the dead-bolt lock on the inside. Fortunately, Clau & Rolly came to our rescue. Wantara was located somewhat close to the dangerous part of the city but I think that was common everywhere in the old city. It was not recommended to walk around the old city after dark (around 7-8 in the evening). No washer/dryer machine (but available for...
Read moreI have traveled to 40 countries and stayed is all kinds of accommodations over the years and I must say that my stay here at Wantara suites has been one of my favorites. Magical doesn’t begin to describe it. It is a hidden oasis within the bustle of Old Town Quito. We arranged a seamless pickup from the airport and were met by host Rolly who gave us so much info the drive in to Wantara. Our suite was charming with beautiful decor, comfortable beds with plenty of bedding, pillows and towels. The kitchen was well appointed, the shower with hot water and great pressure. The outside garden area is amazing and we spent all our free time outside in the gazebo watching all the birds and smelling the flowers. A relaxing place to read and unwind. Clau was always available on What’s App and we arranged a delicious breakfast our first morning for only $8/person. She arranged an old town walking tour for us the first day and Mindo Cloud forest tour the second day through GreenAdventures tour. We had a wonderful time. There is a bakery and mini mart nearby, We walked about 15 minutes to old town and found bigger grocery store there. We followed the safety advice given us and had no problems. Clau and Rolly live on the premises and the compound is within a locked gate so we felt very secure. We also met owners Annamarie and Wolfgang who were delightful. Would...
Read moreThe Wantara complex is an oasis in Quito centro historico! My husband and I stayed in the 2-bedroom suite in the main building. It was the best-stocked home stay rental we have experience to-date. Tastefully decorated, with many thoughtful personal touches that made our stay very comfortable and cozy. The wood stove was a wonderful addition to the suite and an evening fire helped keep the chill away. The shared garden area was beautiful and lovingly maintained. We could see the Virgin Mary statue on el Panecillo from our patio - a fantastic view and felt ethereal at night when lit up and surrounded by cloud and mist. There is some noise around the complex area from neighbouring dogs and traffic so would suggest light sleepers either use ear plugs or stay in a suite in the main building. We walked a bit in the centro area but felt safer using pre-arranged transportation and Ubers/taxis to get around. We pre-arranged a ‘Best of Quito and Surrounding Area’ tour package through Green Adventures and had a blast enjoying the area over a week’s stay. Thanks again for the great experience...
