Mercado 9 de Octubre is three stories with fish and meat on the bottom, fresh produce and a few snack vendors on the ground floor, and then cookshops and smoothie vendors on top.
Bargaining isn't really necessary as prices are pretty standard. The difference is with the size and quality you get for that standard price.
We did a majority of our shopping at these produce markets. Jedd also found one of his favorite meals here - a $1 bowl of chicken or pork, starches, and broth. We also enjoyed the batidos (smoothies).
I should mention here that the only time a local Cuencano actually named an area that we should avoid for safety (primarily at night) it was here. As pickpocketing is a crime of opportunity, it's always wise to carry as few valuables as possible and keep them close and concealed on your body until you need them. Otherwise it is safe to visit during the day.

This is probably the most organized market in Cuenca. The Mercado has a huge open plaza that it shares with a hotel.
The market itself is not only the one inside a big while pavilion but also vendors on streets along the plaza….This illustrates the entrepreneurial spirit of Cuencanos 😎😎😎😎😎.
The array of produce inside and outside of the market pavilion displays an amazing spectrum of colors that are most pleasing to see😎😎😎.
The market pavilion is clean and orderly 👏👏👏 fruits and produce on the main level meats and fish on the lower level, and a food court on the upper level.
