Maison Shaps — Attraction in Beaune

If you're reading this review, you're probably considering whether or not you should commit to visiting Maison Shaps for Hanna's cheese tasting. Based on the experience I had this evening, I definitely think you should! We arrived and met Hanna in the winery where she had plated a beautiful array of cheeses and had on display the wines from her domaine that we were going to use to accompany the cheese. It's clear that she's knowledgable about the wines having grown up in a winemaking family, but she's beyond passionate about the cheese! I know a lot about wine, but I know much less about cheese...she helped fill in some of those holes (in the cheese?!?!) for me, which was cool.

She's also a natural conversationalist and takes time to get to know the clients in order to build anchors for the experience. She has a cool story to go with the tasting, so it's interesting to get to know more about her and her life...and how that led her to create this experience.

I've done a lot of tastings in Burgundy, but this one stands out as unique, as it pairs the wine in a practical sense with something many of us enjoy--fresh, farm made cheese! If you have a spare hour or two, book the tour and then spend some time walking around the beautiful village of Mersault...you...

We have visited a lot of wineries over the years: Napa Valley, Temecula, all over Arizona, Rhode Island, Tuscany, Bordeaux, Loire, Burgundy, etc. After finding Maison Shaps through a simple search of wineries in the area we'd be visiting, I booked a wine and cheese pairing via email. I was with my wife, daughter, and a couple of our friends. What I thought, and hoped, would be a standard wine tasting experience completely blew away my expectations.

This was absolutely, by far, the best wine tasting experience I've ever had. Hanna was simply amazing. Her knowledge of wine & cheese combined with her multicultural viewpoint was priceless! Hanna is the perfect blend of French and American. Her understanding of an American wine experience and flavor profiles helped to explain and guide us through a very informative and genuine French/Burgundy experience. Add to that zero pretentiousness and just a purely welcoming atmosphere. We immediately felt as if a lifelong friend was serving us wine in her home. We left truly more informed and completely positively overwhelmed by the experience. What a lucky find for us.
