Stunning views of the surrounding area. In its present form, this fortification was designed in 1687 by Sébastien Le Prestre, Seigneur de Vauban. A brilliant personality, born in Burgundy in 1633. who died in Paris in 1707. He was Marshal of France during the reign of Louis XIV. It is thanks to his genius and his ability to build fortresses that we see this beautiful structure on the one hand, and on the other hand, thanks to him, the citadel withstood more than 100 days of siege in 1870. Indeed, this is one of the symbols of the military glory of France! The beautiful lion, which is the symbol of the city, was built 10 years after the siege. And of course, this fortification is a must-see. Here, not only a beautiful view of the city and its surroundings, it is also a wonderful museum. What I especially liked about the museum is the wonderful collection of weapons and uniforms from the nineteenth to the beginning of the 20th century. Here you can also take wonderful comfortable trams and drive through the territory of the fortress and visit...

Imposing citadel overseeing Belfort. Recommend to take the train to get to the top and walk down. This way you can see the defenses, gates, tunnels and bridges on your way down and avoid the climb in the heat (went here late July). In very nice shape though most of the buildings aren’t open for the public. Given the extensive structure, it most be substantial. Would be nice to have an exhibition more clearly describing daily life in the citadel for conscripts, NCOs and officers. Also it’s role during German occupation would have been interesting. Basically no original equipment left, no cannons etc. The museum is OK but small, one hour affair. Well setup and describes the relevant time periods, though...
