Le parc a été dessiné par Edouard ANDRÉ qui a conçu une centaine de parcs et jardins dans le monde. Il a été aménagé dans les années 1890, quand l'hôtel particulier du baron Otard de La Grange (propriété de la vicomtesse de Lavilléon) a été vendu à la municipalité et transformé en hôtel de ville.

Le parc a été agrandi en 1922 quand l’hôtel Dupuy-d’Angeac, tout proche, a été acheté par la municipalité et transformé en musée. La réunion des deux jardins a été réalisée par un autre paysagiste, Antoine-Raymond CLAVERY.

Le jardin a été classé monument historique en 1944.
