Driving into Colmar, we couldn’t miss the Statue of Liberty replica standing right in the middle of a traffic circle on Route de Strasbourg. It’s definitely not as tall or impressive as the New York original, but knowing that the sculptor of the real Statue of Liberty, Auguste Bartholdi, was born in Colmar, makes this 12-meter version a pretty cool tribute. It was installed in 2004 to mark the 100th anniversary of his death. We parked conveniently just across the road at the shopping center, which made it super easy to hop out, take a few pictures, and be back on our way. You can’t really get up close since it’s placed in a busy roundabout, but honestly, it’s still worth a quick stop, especially if you’re already passing by or spending the day in Colmar. The best time to visit is early morning or late afternoon when the light hits just right for photos, but in truth, any time of day works since it’s a stop-and-go kind of sight. If you’re exploring Colmar by car like we did, I’d recommend using the Saint-Josse parking garage if you plan to head into the old town afterward, as it’s affordable and close to everything. Read moreThe year 2004 was the commemoration of the centenary of the death of the sculptor Auguste Bartholdi, a native of Colmar and creator, in particular, of the "Liberté enlightening the world" famously known as 'Statue of Liberty' erected in the harbor of New York.
A series of initiatives and events as well as many events have been scheduled in Colmar for this occasion. Among these, the Municipality of Colmar has chosen to install at the northern entrance of the city a replica of the Statue of Liberty.
The work is intended to honor the most prestigious of the Colmarians and to pay homage to the work of art which remains certainly the most famous in the world.
This statue is also a link with the United States already symbolized, since 1986, by the signing of a pact of twinning between Colmar and the university town of Princeton, located not far from New York.
