And yet another unexplainably overrated place. I cannot comprehend why this place is getting so many good reviews. The “vanille noire” flavour had no taste whatsoever. How can your flagship flavour have no taste?? Not even the slightly salty flavour they warn you about on the store front.
I also had another one called “Beirut nights” I think, also no flavour. It’s meant to have orange blossom in it and I have barely been able to taste it. And if you know orange blossom, you KNOW you can taste it anywhere even if it’s hiding.
But forget about the lack of taste: both of these flavours were ICY. It felt like eating tiny little ice crystals instead of the smooth, creamy texture a good ice cream is meant to have. I mean it’s called ice CREAM after all?
Last flavour was “coco grillé”, texture was better (less icy, more creamy), the taste was a bit more pronounced but still wasn’t anything to write home about.
To top it off, as I was eating in front of the shop I made a face that clearly showed my disappointment. A male employee was ready and happy to listen to me, he even tried the flavours in question to understand what I was talking about. As we were talking, the female employee who served us came running from the back asking what’s happening, and when I explained the ice cream was icy she brushed it off and replied “well that’s normal, it depends on the flavours”. Let me just make it very clear: it is NOT normal. If I wanted a slushie I would have got that.
The total came up to 12,40€ for one 3-scoop and one 2-scoop with (store-bought) whipped cream on both. Painfully expensive for a less-than mediocre...
Read moreI only give 1 star because of the variety of flavors, and their originality. It sure is an understatement to say our experience was disappointing. As soon as I saw the lady scooping the ice cream I knew it’d be bad. Ice cream means cream. Not icy water. The ice was so watery it was like a sorbet or a vegan ice cream. And still I know vegan ice creams much better. It was dry, like wet sand or dry snow, and worse, the taste was completely bland. The black vanilla sounded appealing but except the salt it tasted nothing, and nothing like vanilla. The sorbet were also very bland. I don’t understand the amount of Positive reviews. We were four people, unbiased and very eager to be pleased on a hot summer night. The four of us couldn’t even finish the ice creams. Perhaps they had no cream or no milk powder that night and tried to figure something out last minute. It has to be it. Last point it’s overpriced: 4.9€...
Read moreMy husband is vegan, and had the sesame ice cream. It was really nice. It was a little sweet, a little savoury. Just right I am vegetarian. It turns out the vanilla Noire ice cream isn't vegetarian.
I have never had to enquire before about whether an ice cream was vegetarian. There is no sign at Vanilla Noire that says their famous black vanilla ice cream isn't vegetarian. Unfortunately I had it and was immediately suspicious. I asked what was in it and they said it was a secret ingredient! After I specified I was vegetarian, they said, ah you can't have it then.
They immediately offered to give me a vegetarian replacement which was nice, but still, very gutted I probably consumed squid ink
