Nestled at Rue des Ponchettes in the heart of Nice, the Ascenseur du Château offers a charming and convenient way to reach the stunning Castle Hill (Colline du Château) park. This delightful little Art Deco-style elevator is both functional and atmospheric – a quirky vintage gem that adds character to the whole experience.
From the moment we arrived, we were greeted by exceptionally friendly and helpful staff. Their warm demeanour added a personal touch and made the short wait for the lift genuinely pleasant. The elevator itself is small, retro, and rather amusing – it feels like stepping into a nostalgic moment from the early 20th century. While the ride is brief, it’s a memorable part of the visit.
At the top, the park opens up into a serene, elevated oasis with panoramic views of the Baie des Anges, the Old Town rooftops, and the port. We thoroughly enjoyed strolling along the well-kept paths, surrounded by Mediterranean flora, waterfalls, and shady trees. It’s an ideal spot to relax, take photos, or enjoy a picnic.
Instead of taking the lift back down, we chose to descend on foot via the winding paths and staircases carved into the hillside. These led us gently into the vibrant Old Town, offering a scenic and peaceful transition back to the bustling streets of Nice.
In all, the Ascenseur du Château is more than just a lift – it’s a charming part of the city’s character. Efficient, beautifully maintained, and staffed by lovely people, it made our visit to Castle Hill even more enjoyable. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Nice – especially those who appreciate a blend of history, beauty, and a touch of...

You get tired and hungry after climbing that high, they have eatery options for you there. You don't want to climb stairs, you have option of elevator. I chose to take stairs to not miss the view and feel...
Read moreAt 450 we had the guards screaming ‘Au revoir!!!!’ By 455 everyone was out and the guards were locking the gates. Extremely rude and let’s not even add they didn’t speak a word of English....as a tourist it’s very disappointing to me, and let’s not even add that if I behaved that way at work I wouldn’t have a job for a...
