Hügel Park — Attraction in Essen

A beautiful and historical place in Essen! Villa Hügel is much more than just a big old house — it’s full of history and character. Once the home of the Krupp family, the villa is huge and the architecture is really impressive. Inside, you’ll find well-preserved rooms and interesting exhibitions about the Krupp legacy and Germany’s industrial past.

The best part for me was the peaceful park around the villa. It’s perfect for a walk, and you get some amazing views of Lake Baldeney. The area is clean, quiet, and very well-maintained.

Wonderful historical homestead of the famous Krupp's family. Very quant and a must see for anyone who loves history and art. Grounds are wonderfully maintained and house is immaculate for its age littered with lavish artwork throughout. We did not take the tour bit got around as we had a German speaker in our party which is important as the QR code to download the in house tour app does not allow downloads on phones not registered in Germany. All in all a great few hours out and also nearby at the riverside next door...

Interessante plek, maar invulling vd expositie is helaas onder de maat. Het gebouw is oorspronkelijk naast (enorm) woonhuis en visitekaartje van de onderneming ook één groot experiment met tal van technieken (frisse lucht, toilet, centrale verwarming, brandveiligheid en licht). Dit alles op persoonlijk initiatief van Alfred Krupps, die een voorliefde had voor functionaliteit en techniek, en wantrouwen koesterde voor architecten. Oorspronkelijk was het huis betrekkelijk sober ingericht, latere generaties hebben de paleis-achtige aankleding (luxe plafonds, trappen etc) aangebracht. Die latere aankleding staat echter bij een tour exclusief op de voorgrond, terwijl die op zichzelf tamelijk oninteressant is, ook vanuit artistiek oogpunt. Er is geen aandacht voor techniek, leefwijze, zaken als keuken, bediening, sanitair etc. Dit blijft allemaal buiten beeld, behalve op enkele posters vd permanente tentoonstelling. Voorbeeldje: in de hoek van de muziek kamer bevindt zich een 150 jaar oude mechanische thermostaat. Hier staat niet eens een bordje bij. Op allerlei plaatsen zijn luchtschachten, geen aandacht voor. Alleen bij de schilderijen / gobelins die er oorspronkelijk niet hingen. Zeer gemiste kans om de denkwereld van de bouwer te leren kennen. Daar moet u het boekje voor kopen bij de ontvangstbalie.
