Willy Brandt House, Lübeck — Attraction in Lübeck

Fascinating and unexpected gem of a museum dedicated to the memory of Willi Brandt. For me, he was a household name when I was a child but I knew little about him. This museum helps fill in the gaps. (If there is a criticism it might be that it tends towards the hagiographic. We know Herr Brandt was a brave man, essentially good, great even. But I don't think he was perfect and there isn't much shading to provide a complete perspective - in my opinion.) The staff were very friendly and we enjoyed...

Wer, vom Buddenbrook-Haus kommend, die Breite Straße quert und an der folgenden Kreuzung links in die Königstrasse einbiegt, trifft hinter der nach rechts abbiegenden Glockengiessergasse auf das Haus Königstr. 21. Es ist ein modernes Museum, von G. Grass initiiert und 2007 eröffnet. In 5 Räumen wird multimedial und mit originalen Text-, Ton- und Filmdokumenten das Leben von Willy Brandt erzählt, angefangen bei seiner Kindheit in Lübeck als Herbert Ernst Karl Frahm. Es finden sich auch Wahlplakate aus den 70-er Jahren, z.B.dieses: "Deutsche Arbeiter! Die SPD will euch eure Villen im Tessin wegnehmen!" Leider erfährt man fast nichts über die Schattenseiten (Alkohol, Affären, Depressionen) des Nobelpreisträgers. Auch der Hintergrund seines Rücktritts (Guillaume-Affäre) bleibt ergänzungsbedürftig.
