This museum is like viewing someone's home collection--in the best possible way. Don't go into it expecting a "museum experience:" there aren't any explanations of what's shown, signs, etc. There are just old household items and toys and food, unashamedly themselves. It's oddly magical: the sheer variety gives you such a sense of the times. I wish I'd been there with someone who'd lived in the DDR so I could have heard their stories as everything in the museum seems entirely universal. It's a little chaotic, to be sure, but that adds to its charm. I ranked it 4 stars instead of 5 because I would have appreciated a little historical context, perhaps one informational poster per "area."
