A visit to the Münter-Haus is a glimpse into the life of an artist. Gabriele Münter lived here, and her partner in the early part of her career, Wassily Kandinsky, lived for some years in this house as well. You can see the furniture both artists painted as well as the dining table where the manifesto “Der Blaue Reiter” was discussed and composed. There isn’t a large selection of artwork in the house, but it is exciting just to be in this space once inhabited by such important artists and to see some of the objects they kept and that potentially inspired them. It is a great gift of the Gabriele Münter- und Johannes Eichner-Stiftung to keep this space open for visitors. The house itself is lovely, and the garden is pretty and well-maintained. The price of entry is modest and well worth it. I greatly appreciate the spotlight on Münter and her contributions to modern art, both as an artist in her own right and through her bravery in preserving artworks by her contemporaries (especially Kandinsky) in a time where the mere possession of the pieces could have brought dire consequences.

Lovely house overlooking Murnau. This is where the magic happened between Gabriele Münter (1877-1962) and Wassily Kandinsky (1866-1914) in the summers before World War I. You can see why painters were attracted to this house with fabulous views of Murnau and the surrounding area including the Alps. The house itself contains many photographs and art works, including furniture painted by Kandinsky. Famous visitors included the composer Arnold Schönberg.

The House on the Hill ❤️ What a house, garden, and history! The House on the Hill is absolutely breathtaking — I just want to move in. The personal atmosphere is perfectly preserved, even more than 100 years after Kandinsky painted the beautiful horses on the staircase and on the other stunning furniture in the house. It never felt crowded or rushed — you can truly take your time to soak it all in. An absolutely magical place 🥹
