I recently visited Biosphere Potsdam, expecting to see a place that celebrates and respects nature. Unfortunately, I left feeling deeply disappointed by the conditions in which the animals and insects were kept.

The majority of the enclosures were shockingly small, barely larger than the animals themselves, leaving them with little to no room to explore freely or express natural behaviors. The animals, including rodents, birds, snakes, primates, fish, and insects, were constantly exposed to the noise and movement of crowds, trapped in tiny spaces with no access to private, quiet areas where they could rest and retreat or explore. The enclosures provided just enough to keep them alive, but far too little to ensure their well-being or quality of life.

As someone who values conservation and education, it was heartbreaking to witness these creatures living in such stressful, unnatural conditions. A place that claims to inspire respect for nature should set a better example by prioritizing the health, dignity, and natural needs of its inhabitants.

If you truly care about animal welfare, I encourage you to reconsider visiting this facility until significant improvements are made. Biosphere Potsdam needs to take meaningful steps to improve the animals' living conditions—whether that means creating larger, more natural habitats, relocating animals to better-equipped sanctuaries, or making other ethical decisions that prioritize their well-being. We should not support places that compromise the dignity and health of the beings...

We were planning to go to the Biosphäre and reserved the breakfast buffet. Everyone was looking forward to it and then the night before, my daughter turned really sick and the next morning, she was so sick that we could not make it. The restaurant said that we had to cancel the breakfast 14 o'clock the day before and we could not have been able to do it. We explained the situation and let them know that we were sorry about not being to cancel and not showing up. We said we could either pay the full price and make it another day. They said no because we wasted the food, which is totally understandable. We suggested we pay for the food. They still refused. I know that they have the right to charge us the full amount, but this is still quite upsetting for is that they could not find a middle way. So we need to pay a lot for an experience that didn't happen. My kids were already very upset that we couldn't make it to the Biosphäre and the breakfast. So if anyone wants to reserve the breakfast, please be aware that this is not a 'reservation'. It is a ''booking". You are obliged to pay if you can't cancel on time. I am sorry that we can't even comment on the Biosphäre because we are quite upset with the incident that makes us not really want to go...

The Biosphere is a nice place in Potsdam to view tropical plants and animals. The diversity of the plants is good, but they seem to be suffering from lack of care. There were plants with many yellow and/or brown leaves. We felt that for a tropical atmosphere the humidity was way too low. The staff was very friendly and answered many of our questions about the animals. The gift shop has some interesting items, and the normal gift shop stuffed animals, etc. We didn't eat there, but the people eating seemed to be satisfied with their food. A highlight was the butterfly room, where the butterflies fly freely, and being able to hold a walking stick. We will go back in a few months, and hope that the plants will be in better shape.
