Roman Baths — Attraction in Potsdam

This is the most beautiful, cozy and interesting historical villa that I have ever seen. If I lived at that time in past with my current tastes, or if I lived somewhere on an island in a warm climate, I would like just such a villa. Not more, not richer, but exactly this one. It's beautiful with everything ... except, perhaps, the one that it's old. It has a very beautiful appearance and structure. Entrance through the grape arch, several stairs upstairs, a courtyard with a fountain, a small house that can be used for storage some things and garden supplies. And there is access to the big pond of park. Inside, on the ground floor, the bathhouse itself. Small but cozy, and several statues. On the second floor there is a small museum, instead of which I could make a small living room. Although, in fact, there is nothing to do here, besides this small museum, I highly recommend to visit and look at this...

Das romantische Ensemble der Römischen Bäder bildet das pittoreske Gegenstück zum strengen Schloss Charlottenhof. Es entführt uns auf ein italienisches Landgut: Hermen des Dionysos, pompeijanische Säulenfragmente, der antike Kentauren-Sarkophag und Beete mit südländischem Gemüse und üppigem Pflanzenschmuck wecken Assoziationen an ein ideales Italien.

Der zeichnerisch begabte Kronprinz und spätere König Friedrich Wilhelm IV. lieferte für das Ensemble selbst zahlreiche Ideenskizzen. Karl Friedrich Schinkel und Ludwig Persius ließen die königliche Vision Wirklichkeit werden: Ab 1829 entstanden nacheinander das Hofgärtnerhaus, der angrenzende Pavillon als römischer Podiumstempel mit Pfeilerportikus, das Gehilfenhaus, die große Laube, die Arkadenhalle und schließlich die Römischen Bäder.

Bei den Römischen Bädern handelt es sich allerdings weder um die Nachbildung römischer Thermen noch um eine antike Villa. Der Kronprinz ließ vielmehr eine architektonische Neuschöpfung errichten, die sich an ein italienisches Landhaus im Stil des 15. Jahrhunderts anlehnte. Auch die damals durch Ausgrabungen in Herculaneum und Pompeji neu gewonnenen Erkenntnisse über den antiken Hausbau wurden in lockerer Folge von Atrium, Impluvium, Caldarium, Apodyterium, Viridarium und Billiardzimmer spielerisch und farbenprächtig umgesetzt.

Flache Satteldächer, ein Turm, asymmetrisch gefügte Baukörper, weinbelaubte Pergolen, eine Terrasse mit Blick über einen See hinüber zum Schloss Charlottenhof und den von Peter Joseph Lenné geschaffenen Landschaftspark gehören zur unverwechselbaren Charakteristik dieses Refugiums Friedrich Wilhelms IV., das auch Alexander von Humboldt bei seinen...

I didn’t take many pictures of the place, sorry But i can recommend it. It’s a beautiful place with a beautiful garden. I saw from other reviews that there is a museum inside the building and apparently it’s nice. However you need to pay around 5€ to get in and I didn’t do it because I thought it was just to see the garden. Would recommend it if you want to know more about it and see the inside plus the baths.
