The Lustgarten is the oldest garden in Potsdam. It is bordered by the Breiten Straße with the Marstall in the north, the Havel in the east, the Bahndamm in the south and the Ministry of the Interior in the west. Created as a baroque garden under the Grand Elector Friedrich Wilhelm for the city palace and half transformed into a flat exercise area under King Friedrich Wilhelm I, the rest was embellished by Friedrich II and redesigned in 1829 by Peter Joseph Lenné. After the Second World War, the removal of the city palace began with the construction of the Ernst Thälmann Stadium in the Lustgarten. When the Interhotel Potsdam was built in 1969 the pleasure garden disappeared beyond recognition. On the occasion of the 2001 Federal Garden Show, a new pleasure garden was created after the Thälmann Stadium...

It rained on me on my trip here, but luckily it was a brief summer rain and I can still marvel at the terraced landcscaping of the palace gardens.

From the back yard of the gardens, Sanssouci Palace actually looks huge, but it is in fact a small residence, built close to the parks for closer access.

A central fountain frames the garden and this one in particular was a marvel at the time, when hydraulics was still in an infancy. Shooting jets of water as high as possible was a favorite endeavor.

At the top of the garden, the view extends all the way into the Potsdam town center. I do feel that the view from here while amazing, is not as magnificent as the view from the foot of this terrace. You don't really see the terraced landscaping that makes this garden...

Beautiful place to visit. In november they cover up the statues in the park to protect them from winter. Keep that in mind. It's a beautiful park in autumn. It's walkable from one side to the other but it is quite far. Lots of small extra buildings in the park. Sansouci was not open (saturday, 11 november). But the new castle was. Also the botanical garden. I didn't go in both buildings. Some of the buildings need some restoration or cleaning. It looks a little bit wore down. They are renovating the orangerie and that is something I would love to see in summer or spring. Overall is the park not very touristy and many locals run or walk in the park with their kids. Lovely atmosphere! Very peaceful.

In 2018, I visited Sanssouci Palace and Gardens, which was commissioned by Frederick the Great, King of Prussia, and designed by Georg Wenzeslaus von Knobelsdorff. It was finished in 1747. Sanssouci is actually a French name meaning “without worries” or “carefree”. I have to say, I like the title. It’s a really green and colorful place that mixes nature and beautiful architecture in an awesome way. It may be designed for a pleasant retreat for kings, but it fits the Berlin aesthetic too. One of the first things that struck me about Berlin is that there are parks and nature everywhere throughout the city. I hope to visit again soon when the opportunity comes.
