The W.E.B. Du Bois Center honors the enduring legacy of W.E.B. Du Bois, a pioneering African American sociologist, historian, and civil rights activist. Located at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, the center serves as a vibrant hub for research, education, and public engagement. It aims to promote a deeper understanding of African American culture, history, and social justice issues through its various programs and initiatives. The center houses an extensive collection of archives, including personal papers, manuscripts, and photographs of Du Bois. These resources are invaluable for scholars and researchers studying his life and work. In addition to its archival holdings, the center supports scholarly work by offering fellowships, grants, and hosting academic conferences. These efforts help to further academic discourse and promote new research in the fields related to Du Bois’s contributions. Beyond academia, the W.E.B. Du Bois Center actively engages with the broader community through public programs, exhibitions, and educational outreach. These initiatives aim to foster a broader appreciation for Du Bois’s impact on social justice and civil rights. The Dubois Centre for Panafrican Culture is a fine destination for those who appreciate history. W.E.B. Dubois was an important figure in African history having a large role in the Africana Encyclopedia for example. He was also the first black man to obtain a PhD from Harvard. The museum tour is guided and guests are shown various rooms in the home including his library which contains over 1,500 books, and his bedroom in which is displayed a gift from communist China, a letter from Lenin, and his academic dress from Harvard. The grounds are quite nice and we'll manicured. The mausoleum containing Dr Dubois is particularly well maintained. The museum is not large but offers insights into Dr Dubois' life. There is also a rather nice restaurant on the grounds which offers a good selection of menu items. The Roots Fave pizza is very good.

I accept what the curators of Dr. DuBois has done thus far in maintaining his home as a public display. Yet, I am elated that they are in a capital improvement phase to build a more appropriate facility to house, display and share with the world the live and contributions of this unique human being. There thee volumes of Dr. DuBois final writing that are displayed in a showcase with no way for we who desire to read them to do so. There is future plans to digitize the volumes, but still I ache because of our inability to access today what this great thinker may have pinned during his final year. Thus, I ask you who are lovers of knowledge to add their capital improvement endeavors to your list of organizations to support.

The WEB Dubois Center is a historic house museum well worth the visit. I appreciate the thorough, enlightening tour of the home and burial site of this important, repatriated African-American educator, civil rights activist, writer/editor and Rhodes Scholar, Fisk and Harvard University graduate William Edward Burghardt DuBois and notable activist Shirley Graham DuBois, his 2nd wife. It houses unique items belonging to the DuBoises including reference materials of the Encyclopedia Africana and serves as a research library. The Centre is an authentic must-see for those interested in learning the global impact of the Pan-Africanist giant.
