A monastery you must visit.
If you go there by car, the last 300 meters of the road to the monastery is very narrow, just one line for one car. And it is a two ways road. If two cars met, coming from opposite directions, one of them must to go backward to larger spot so as they can pass.
Near the church, on the shore, there is a parking place that can accommodate 100 cars, easily.
The church is not something special or impressive. What is impressive is the place were it is situated: on a formation of rocks, on the water. You can reach the monastery walking on a 50 meters bridge.
The other interesting thing is that near the monastery there is a small harbour full of fisherman boats - very suggestive - the reference to the Holy Bible being very obvious.
The fact that the monastery is situated on a rock, on the water is another suggestion about the "Walking on water" event from Holy Bible - Peter having faith was walking on the water, and so to this monastery by faith it is staying on the water - as an parallelism.
The interior of the monastery, of the church, it is very small, with walls painted in white, with a lot of framed paintings on the walls. There is a place were you can put a diptych and to take candles. The place where you can light the candles is located outside the church.
There is a shop with souvenirs, just near the church. There are 3 cats and some ducks. But, between the ducks there was an intruder. See the photo.
We walked around the monastery and on a side we saw how the foundation stones and the wall are very nice merging each other. Also, somewhere behind the monastery we saw the ladder of Jacob (Genesis 28:12) :)))
The monastery is near the runway center line of Corfu airport so you can see aircrafts departing or landing, passing very close to the monastery.
The church...
Read moreStaying at Corfu Holiday Palace, just a short walk from the monastery, made our visit even more special. The Holy Monastery of Panagia Vlacherna, dating back to the 17th century, is a place where history, faith, and natural beauty come together. Once a convent, it remains a cherished site of worship, with its whitewashed walls and distinctive bell tower creating a picture-perfect scene.
While it's not completely quiet due to the nearby airport runway, this unique setting—where spiritual heritage meets the movement of modern life—adds to its charm. Watching the sunset here, with the monastery reflected in the water and planes gliding overhead, is an unforgettable experience. A truly iconic and thought-provoking place in Corfu, where one can reflect on both the past and...
Read moreI loved every moment whilst travelling around and visiting monasteries.. Coming from a person that avoided church when I was younger. It felt like I was meant to go and share my blessings. Well worth the Visit. I had just lost my grandad who played a big part in my upbringing and every monastery I visited I lit a candle for him. It just felt right to have a mini vigil for him especially as his death was so very recent. Never in a million years did I know that corfu was based and cultured around Churches and monasteries....I was going for a break and I found a fab deal Nothing more and it turned out to be the most spiritual, eye opening and adventurous holiday Ever.. Now if that wasn't a message from my grandad I don't know...
