The museum is not hard to find; parking can be found nearby and around. There is a ramp outside for wheelchair/toddler buggy and for people who find steps daunting. The WCs are downstairs. There is a lift for access to the 1st floor. The exhibits are spread over 2 floors.
There is a small charge to visit, which I thought was worth it.
The collection on show is matter of fact and to the point, of finds in the area; excellent roman mosaic on show. It’s one of those places where one won’t feel pushed to hurry along or to get to the end because there is too much to take in and time is pressing. I felt at ease moving at a leisurely pace. And I can go back to something I want to see again in order to consolidate because the displayed item is just over there. I can find it again easily.
Very pleased to have visited this unassuming building that quietly housed the Kissamos archaeological findings. What made me smile broadly was the colourful hop scotch grid I saw outside the museum. I wondered whether in its previous uses – it was once the venetian governor’s “home”(?) who knows before that! – was hopscotch a game enjoyed by little venetian children of a time long ago. There would have been sounds of gaiety and laughter. Perhaps the grown-ups partook, too. It was a still and hot day today (17.5.2024), not too many...

Located right in the centre of Kissamos the museum entry charge is just €3. Although not a large display, there are some wonderful items and very good interpretive captions and narrative.
The collection is on two floors linked by both stairs and a lift. For us the highlight was the display of Greco-Roman mosaics.
I would have scored the museum higher but for two things. Firstly a very strange policy on photography (no zoom or tele lenses????) and secondly, there was display lighting in place but it was not switched on. Consequently some parts of the display were poorly lit and other parts were not shown off to full effect. The mosaics would have looked vibrant if the lighting had been switched on. Perhaps the gloom was part of the austerity measures.
However, still a good 20-30 minutes well-spent seeing artefacts from the rich...
Read moreA hidden gem at the centre of Kissamos! Who would've thought that this old not very good looking or appealing building would be a portal to the history of Kissamos! Amazing excibits, restored artifacts and - among others - the biggest mosaic I've ever seen greatly preserved!! A must for any museum lover or not! Very polite staff eager to help and answer any questions. An electronic guide through headphones would've been very handy, explaining exhibits as we walk among them, especially since there is no employee to work...
