The Sitia Archaeological Museum displays Minoan artifacts from various excavations in Lassithi, the eastern part of Crete. In the last part, there are artifacts from the Greek and Roman periods. Although the museum is small, it is simply and beautifully planned. In particular, objects from the daily lives of the Minoans are presented to visitors with informative notes. It's just that the repetition of some objects can be a bit boring when visit. Palaikastro Kouros, the most important work of the museum, whose pieces were found and combined on different dates, will welcome you at the point where you start your tour. Dating to the 15th century BC, this statue is the only known cult image of the Minoan civilization and reveals the high point of Minoan art. The entrance fee to the museum is normally 3€. The lady who greeted us said it was free as we were young and didn't take any money. He also let us leave our bags at the entrance. We thank you.

While a small, country museum, the archaeological museum in Sitia houses one of the most significant finds from the Minoan era, the Palaikastro Kuros. This is a male god made from a hippopotamus tusk and was deliberately destroyed a part of the Minoan collapse dating around 1450 BC. Something very awful happened to the Minoans in 1450 BC. It could have been civil war, but my take is this was a Mycenaean invasion. The museum has a small and concise set of displays about the Minoans that gives you a few flavor of their civilization. Suggest stopping here as part of a return trip from Zakros.

Such a small and very interesting treasure! A good way to explore the era of the Minoan Times Crête, with a lot of descriptions of the daily life of the people and their minds. The statue at the entrance is a marvel of art, even today in my opinion. I was quite astonished of the work that has been done to bring this museum to life. Very good job to the archaeological team, please make sure the artifacts are all lit up and the descriptions - in a few of the displays - corrected (minoan - mycenean and so on..)

If you're at all interested in Cretan culture throughout antiquity you'll find this small-ish museum highly interesting. Helpful explanations next to the displays are in Greek and English. However, if you plan to go on a summer day, be sure the air conditioner is working. We saw that it was broken down as of 4 weeks ago and that the museum was closed as a result. When we saw that it was open today we thought it must have been repaired. Wrong. Even the attendant couldn't stand to the heat inside, so he parked himself on the shaded veranda out front and only went in to collect the nominal entrance fee when visitors showed up from time to time. Our visit was shorter than we would...
