The site has the form of a temple, probably dating back to the late 5th century BC. It was made of massive limestone blocks and was divided in two connecting chambers. Many researchers share the opinion that it is the temple of Karneios Apollo. However, according to local tradition and the travel writer Pausanias, the remains of Leonidas were transferred and buried there. Either way, the site deserves to be preserved better and a plaque should be added explaining the historical background.

The tomb of King Leonidas is situated in a large square with plenty of open spaces and benches. There is a very nice Grill and Coffee house just opposite of the walking street. Grab a delicious ice coffee and watch the tomb or take pictures. The whole scene is very "Spartan" no information plaques or anything fancy. All in line with the spartan culture. Worth a visit and a quick rest or a bite to eat

5 stars for what it is, zero stars for a tourist attraction Nice cafe on the square , I wouldn’t go out my way come here, it was a bit of an anti climax to my road trip around the Peloponnese! But on the other hand happy to say I’ve been here If you’re gonna come, do it but lower your expectations! Greece get your act together this could be a great attraction your definitely missing a trick!

The tomb itself is not really enough of a reason to visit, however, Sparta is a lovely place, full of restaurants and places to explore, the Leonidas monument is near the tomb, and is worth checking out as well. There is a lot of construction going on the main road, and it makes parking difficult, but finding places should be no problem.

¡LA TUMABA DEL REY LEONIDAS! El sitio se encuentra en un parque, se trata de varias piedras que están en el interior de una valla cerrada. No hay indicaciones de ningún tipo en el lugar ni en ningún sitio. Aquí se demuestra la absoluta dejadez de Esparta con su magnifica historia, como en el yacimiento de Esparta que esta completamente descuidado. Rodeando el parque hay varios bares donde puedes tomarte una cerveza "Sparta" (muy buena por cierto) mientras te relajas ya que el sitio es muy tranquilo. Se nota que el sitio es prácticamente desconocido para extranjeros ya que aparte de ser los únicos en el lugar, la gente que estaba en los bares nos miraban como a bichos raros mientras nos estábamos sacando fotos. Descubrimos este sitio de gran importancia histórica y simbólica gracias a un Espartano que nos lo comento en la estatua de Leonidas. A pesar de todo yo no dejaría de visitar este lugar, ni el yacimiento de Esparta ni la estatua de Leonidas, por todo lo que representa en la Historia.

Nothing to see really. Just a bunch of stones behind a fence. I would definitely not come just for this. Especially seeing there is no explanation whatsoever. You wouldn't know it is the tomb of Leonidas, it would be the same : just some random rocks in a middle of a little square.
