This was the 4th stop of our visit to the Upper Thessaloniki City... Unlike the sites that we saw earlier, the Triangle Tower was actually built by the Turks in the 15th century to defend against siege during that period. The Triangle Tower has also been given a beautiful name of being the “balcony of Thessaloniki” because from here, we were able to see panoramic views of the coastline of Thessaloniki, including the port, the waterfront and on a clear day, Mount Olympus in the distance. This stretch of the wall is also one of the most well-preserved and after taking (too many) photos next to the Tower, we strolled along the walls until we arrived at a park. The wall actually divides, in our opinion, the “commercial” side with cafes and restaurants – some with sea views as well as the “residential” side where residents stay. We also noticed that on the “commercial” side of the wall, the wall is pretty well finished but we actually prefer the rugged beauty on the “residential” side. There, we found a little park with views of the wall and had our corn chips with cheese (something like cheetos) and rehydrated ourselves for the walk back down... Easy to access from where we were (near Thessaloniki port) by bus. Straight up and only a short walk to the Triangle Tower. €5 to go up to the top but if you just want to wall around the old city walls and see the view from there it's free and still beautiful. You may just get a better view of the church from the top but otherwise you still get an excellent view of the city. Wasn't too busy around 9am, just a few coach loads of people and some who had walked/taken the bus up. I imagine it gets a lot busier in the afternoon and in the peak of summer. Remember to wear comfortable shoes even if taking the bus as the stones can be uneven and there's a lot of steps if you choose to walk down! Walking down back to the city takes around 15 mins, not too strenuous but lots of slopes and/or steps. Totally worth visiting though! Bus fare cost 80c per person.
