Visiting the Castle of Akrotiri in Santorini was a remarkable experience. Perched on the cliffâs edge, the castle offers panoramic views of the caldera and the deep blue Aegean Sea, making it one of the islandâs most scenic spots.
The walk up to the castle is pleasant and not too strenuous, winding through charming paths and giving glimpses of traditional Cycladic architecture along the way. Once at the top, the ruins themselves are small but picturesque, offering a real sense of history and the islandâs strategic importance in past centuries.
I went in the late afternoon, and the light was incredible â the sun casting golden hues over the water and the cliffs, creating a perfect setting for photos or simply to pause and enjoy the view. The area is quiet compared to the busier towns of Fira or Oia, which makes it a peaceful retreat.

   Read moreIf you are visiting this as a destination in itself then you'll be sadly disappointed. The castle is at the summit of the hill in Akrotiri and is free to enter and open 24 hours. There is no onsite information about it and it is basically a jumble of rocks, building materials and a few walls, nothing to mark it out as in any way a 'castle'. There are nice views from the top though, it is lit up at night and it is only a few minutes walk from some nice restaurants. I walked from the direction of Athanasias Road (by the ELTA mailbox bus stop). If you were to come from the direction of Fira, this is the stop where you alight.
