What a place this is! Saturday night in Akritiri, Theofanis is the place to be! There isn't a lot of eateries in the village, but we were particularly looking forward to this one. The core of the Saturday night is the live music and the plate smashing, and it didn't really disappoint.
So for starters, this is Saturday night. They are RAMMED. I'm not sure I'd even consider approaching the restaurant if I hadn't already booked, but there are people eating at the bar, queuing outside etc. From what we could tell, they operate a quick turnover policy, with one couple seemingly asked to finish their wine at the bar, which caused a bit of commotion. I think it is a much different story mid week. We didn't experience any issues.
The menu is pretty good, lots of options with daily fresh fish options and chefs specials (although ironically the chef's special today was the fish of the day...). A broad cocktail menu and diverse wine list. We both had a cocktail (parrots of the Carribbean - mega yummy, and frozen strawberry daiquiri - even more yummy) and a bottle of Santo Wine (also very very delicious).
For the food, we had a shared cod croquettes which was so delicious. Never had anything like it, but would happily eat a pile of the thing! For mains, my partner went for the fish of the day (seabass) and I went for the aptly named pork tomohawk (what man wouldn't?!). To start, the pork was good. Really well cooked on the grill but admittedly a lot of grilled pork can get a bit boring, and they're only accompanied by a few boiled potatoes. Also a pork tomohawk is a bit of an odd cut, in the sense that there's a lot of fat and bone, so actually not a massive volume of food. You can navigate some of the outer bits to get some nuggets of meat, but there's not a lot.
The seabass was good, but a bit stingy on the single fillet. Also it was placed on a bed of pureed something, not sure what and not a lot much else (lacking vegetables or potatoes). We did ask for some bread, but it never came so none of it was mopped up. Therefore sadly we did leave not completely full.
Overall it's a 5* on the basis of it being a really fun night and just an outstanding atmosphere. To be fair to the staff, they're operating a mammoth dining floor so it's not completely surprising sometimes things get missed or can become a bit slow. Orders and food came out quite quickly and the evening went quite smooth. We wouldn't hesitate to come back, this time to try some...
Read moreSince we were staying in Akrotiri we came by because of the good reviews. Unfortunately we found them to be unjustified. The food was just about "okay" but there are much better options on Santorini. Especially considering the price tag. Also there are items on the menu that aren't available at all according to the waiter. Why not take them off then?! The restaurant was quite empty when we arrived that evening. This apparently led to a certain boredom among the staff. But let me tell you it's massively disturbing when at times up to three waiters are standing almost next to a guest looking or rather staring at them while they are trying to enjoy the food or having a conversation. Whole service had a weird vibe. At some point towards the end one of the waiters got really rude for no apparent reason. This very waiter also didn't hand over the bill but unprofessionally enough brought the card reader with the total value typed in already. Since I have now calculated we got overcharged. Or maybe the sourdough bread is actually a price per person and not per serving which is not stated on the menu though.
Update after owner's response: I never mentioned we went out of budget at any point. It was perfectly clear beforehand. Actually as you can see above I wrote about pricing not matching the quality received. That's a wholly different topic. Even in the direct vicinity of your venue there are several other establishments offering better quality with a similar pricing structure or also for less. And there you are treated like a guest without feeling observed the whole stay or treated in a rude way. I'm still confident there has been an overcharge. Checking with your online menu there's a few € difference. I'm quite certain it's about the item mentioned above and either charged twice or having a different pricing structure as all other items but not clearly mentioned. You know this is only about 2,50€ but with all the other flaws it just adds up to a bad experience. And for the items not being sold maybe check the bar menu. Hint: It's with the...
Read moreThe worst meal and experience I had in all of Greece. An awful meal to end my holiday. Music is too loud, eggplant dip tasted like nothing very bland. The taramasalata was SO salty it was inedible. The olive and tzatziki dips were good. Pita to dip ratio was off. Staff is inattentive to say the least - the people next to me asked 3 times for salt and pepper. Steak came out where hostess sliced it awkwardly with a very blunt knife. I said it was almost blue and too undercooked I’d ordered it medium rare. It was sent back and the same sliced steak was brought to me just microwaved, it was now well done and cardboard like. This is not high quality by any standards, even a pub would make you a new steak (and be able to cook it properly). I wasn’t given a steak knife, waited 5 minutes before having to go up and get one myself. Wasn’t served with the sauce either as stated on the menu. The cut also had more fat than it should’ve. I make better steaks with my eye closed. If a restaurant can’t make a medium rare steak and used a MICROWAVE (you can tell because the fat renders white) then there is a serious problems. Waited again 5-10 mins for service to ask for bill. No one around. I walked up to the bar and asked to pay where they sent me back to my seat to wait. Currently waiting another 10 min to again ask for my bill so I can leave. $85 AUD!!!! I’d have rather go hungry. An absolute rip off. The manager then came with my bill and said nothing, didn’t offer to take it off the bill (since it was twice they made a mistake and I didn’t eat it). I wouldn’t dine here again even if...
