Fiscardo village is located 49.5 km north of Argostoli, the capital of Kefalonia. Lapped in hills carpeted with cypresses and olive trees, this quaint fishing village is so beautiful that it was added to Project Natura 2000 for its protection. It boasts its own port but also a marina that is considered a boaters’ paradise and is densely packed with yachts in the summertime. Harbourside, plentiful taverns, bars, and shops are waiting to welcome the visitors. Despite being a relatively cosmopolitan destination nowadays, Fiskardo possesses a couple of sites for the history buffs, such as the Venetian Lighthouse and the Roman Cemetery. Nikos Kavvadias, one of the greatest Greek writers, lived here. Prehistoric graves testify that the village has been inhabited for the last 40.000 years. Previously named Panormos, it was a well-known port during the Roman period. Even though the great earthquakes of 1953 caused extensive destruction to the Ionian islands, Fiskardo somehow managed to stay untouched, resulting in picturesque traditional Ionian architecture adorning the alleys until this day. Fiscardo has permanent inhabitants, so all necessary facilities are available for visitors. It’s a small village, so everything is at a close distance. Cars are not allowed inside the village, so you should leave your vehicle in the parking above the settlement or on the side of the main road. Enjoy!

It is surrounded on one side by a very rugged coast full of cypress trees and on the other side by old ruins. However, the most interesting feature is the presence of a cave located along the right coast looking at the sea from the beach. It can be reached either by swimming or by following a small path on the coast. Fiskardo was not destroyed during the 1953 Ionian Earthquake (also known as the Great Kefalonia Earthquake). While most of Kefalonia lay in ruins, Fiskardo's buildings were spared the wrath of the cataclysmic earthquake. It is one of the few villages where you can see historic Venetian-style homes. There are a couple of bakeries to be found in Fiskardo selling fresh bread daily. There are plenty of lovely boutique shops to browse in Fiskardo selling clothes, jewellery, shoes, bags, hats and souvenirs. Near to Elis Restaurant is a little shop selling Greek produce which is worth a visit.

Fiskardo harbour and area is lovely but the beach itself here is very small in length and width and right next to the promenade and restaurants. So compared to all the other wonderful beaches on Kefalonia this is not the best. However the general area is great to wander around with a lovely relaxed vibe with lots of boats and people coming and going off the boats. Great for relaxed people watching! We visited in late May and whilst the rest of the island was quiet there were a lot of boats and generally Fiskardo (and Assos) were busier than other places.
