Took a private boat from Santa Catarina to San Juan to see LA calle de las sombrillas . The boat charter was reasonably priced, considering the captain and his boat stay with you until you are ready to go. Part of the deal we got included a tour guide that took us to see how they make textiles from beginning to end. From pulling thread from raw cotton to the dying process and finally a demonstration on their weaving process. I definitely have to give credit to all the hard work that goes into this art. From there, we were taken to the coffee experience , and they explained the organic coffee growing process. From there, we had the chocolate experience, and it was also informative, and of course, the chocolate is great. Last on the tour was the honey production. They had different variety of honey products and actual honey. If your allergic to bees be warned, they do have bee hives that are active. Bees did not sting anyone, but just in case, be warned. Awesome place to visit. After the tour, we walked around and enjoyed the local shopping, and I personally enjoyed the local art everywhere. It's incredible such talent! A must go to the point if you're visiting Lake Atitlan. For what is worth our tour continued to other spots on the lake that are also worth...
Read moreUmbrella street holds so much charm! I look forward to the next visit since this one was slightly limited. The locals here are laid back and don't get into your face when you shop. The scenery is bold and we were told about the images you see at the base of Sombrero and Umbrella street. This pass of the town resulted in a few purchases and they took bank cards which was helpful.
The only drawback was the rain, but that's really unstoppable in rainy season! It comes in gently but finishes with parts of the city flooding and water rushing FAST down the streets. The locals are used to it so we took a cue from them and waited on the porch of one of the shops before hopping into a tuktuk to...
Read moreBeautiful and artistic. I arrived at the perfect time to get daytime pictures before the sun went down and I was able to see the lights.
Though it is beautiful, it's also super expensive! Think double or triple the prices I've seen at other places in Guatemala and Mexico (400Q for pants I found elsewhere on the lake for 200-250Q, and even less in Mexico). The "super sale" prices that some offered were still more than I'd encountered elsewhere.
There were also people walking the street trying to push their products, but they were fewer and not nearly as pushy as...
