Sri polamamba temple is a famous devotional place. Every year in the month of April celebrate Jathara.. VISAKHAPATNAM: The idol of Karakachettu Polamamba, which is considered to be the reigning deity of Waltair, was apparently netted by a group of fisherfolk some 400 years ago and was offered a Karaka Chettu (sage-leaved Gall Nut tree) as shelter. However, the trusteeship of the idol was later handed over to the Maddi family of the Reddika community in Pedawaltair, who installed the main idol and members of the other communities came together to build a temple for the Mother Goddess a few hundred years ago. Ever since, the Reddikas have been the trustees of the temple.
According to folklore, the Maddi family was handed over the responsibility of taking care of the Goddess after she appeared in the dreams of the elders among the fisherfolk. Since then, the Goddess has been worshipped by members of various communities in a democratic manner.
According to M Prasada Reddy a member of the Maddi family, "The Mother Goddess is taken all over Waltair Town for 12 days in chariots offered to the deity by various communities. All the community members are treated as equals and are allowed to participate in the fest."
Most importantly, the temple is also a curious mix of Vedic and non-Vedic practices. While the Brahmin priests perform pujas, the members of certain other communities continue with their age-old practices of performing animal sacrifices, though it is not done within the temple premises.
"The temple is a perfect blend of traditional Vedic and non-Vedic cultures. However, one can safely say that the idol of the Mother Goddess dates back to the Chalukya-Chola period, with the sculptural features clearly indicating that the idol could have belonged to a temple dating back to the 12th century AD," history buff BS...
