One of Bangalore's oldest and most iconic man-made lakes, Sankey Tank can entertain the whole family, be it for photography 📸 📷, fitness, or street food. Any North Bangalorean will tell you that they’ve been there more than once in their life. Spread over 15 hectares, it extends to portions of Malleshwaram, Vyalikaval, and Sadashiva Nagar, with two entrances, so you don't have to run around to get in. Shutterbugs and flower kids can happily relinquish in some macro, landscape, or bird photography 📸 owing to the variety of topics there or just to breathe some fresh air. You will find ducks, herons, lots of flora, and the odd litter of puppies just enjoying the natural surroundings and limited human disruption. Head there between 6 am to 9 am or 3:30 pm to 7:30 pm in the evenings 🌙 to enjoy the natural beauty of the tank which was built in the late 1800s(1882) under the administration of Colonel Richard Hieram Sankey of the Madras Sappers Regiment. This tank was constructed to cater for the water supply demands throughout Bangalore City at that time. It was also called Gandhadhakotikere at that time as the Government Sandalwood Depot was situated near it. On occasion, you can go boating, but we’d suggest you skip it to enjoy the water from the outside. With a wide jogging and walking track (no traffic jams here), an open group exercise space (we’ve seen many a yoga and laughter therapy groups), an open gym for adults and a play area for kids, the whole fam can get fit at once with an extra dose of oxygen. Relax down at one of the many benches across the route and park, or use it to catch a great sunrise or sunset depending on when you’re there.

Sankey Tank is a man-made lake on 37.5 acres near Vyalikaval, Malleshwaram, and Sadashivanagar. The lake is managed by the State Forest Department. The Maurya Sankey Boat Club provides guests with a wide range of boat rides, including rowboats, pedal boats, and motorboats. Boating and transportation to and from the island in the middle of the lake are both inexpensive. KSTDC is in charge of this boat club. Colonel Richard Hieram Sankey of the Madras Sappers Regiment oversaw the construction of this artificial tank in 1882. This tank was constructed to meet the water supply needs of Bangalore City at the time. At the period, it was also known as Gandhadhakotikere. This beautiful lake is a wonderful spot to go for walks and running, and it also has a well-developed play area for children. The walkways are exquisitely designed. The water is fantastic. Beautiful and peaceful setting for an early morning or late stroll. The splendor is accentuated by the late-evening lighting. From here, the twilight sky is stunning. A cool wind might help you relax and de-stress. The view from the lake is breathtaking. With plants and trees near the lake, the lake itself expresses a magnificent picture. The most calm area for a peaceful walk, yet far too busy on weekends. People should follow basic decorum and refrain from littering the area. The lake's environs are rich in vegetation and wildlife. The lake must be visited.

The name Sankey refers to the Col. Richard Heiram SANKEY who constructed this tank in 1882 to beat against water shortages during great famine of 1875-77. A very peaceful and healthy place with a huge footfall. At one entry a children's park will welcome you and on the other entry a pond with pigeons is there. Many people feed those pigeons and children will be more happy while serving them food in their own hands. In this digital world, a best place for Photography lovers to capture scenic beauty of Sankey tank and slo-mo of flying pigeons. Please be cautious while taking the photos near this pond as this deep enough and you will be getting warned if you just get two steps down into the pond just to take photos from police personnel. The entry here is free but has timing restrictions, It closes by 10AM in the morning and reopens at 4:30PM in the evening. You can enjoy cool breeze and chirping of birds. A good place for birdwatchers as well. You can also notice they marked distance on the track for every 100m. The management here also made few artificial birding nests floating on the water. There also yoga sessions conducted here.
