Hauz-e-Shamsi, located in Mehrauli, Delhi, is a remarkable historical reservoir with a rich legacy dating back to the early 13th century. Constructed during the reign of Sultan Shams-ud-Din Iltutmish, this ancient water tank was designed to serve the water needs of the surrounding region, reflecting the advanced engineering skills of the medieval period. The reservoir is an impressive example of early Islamic architecture, featuring a large, rectangular tank with a depth that was designed to ensure a steady water supply even during dry periods. Its construction, primarily of stone, demonstrates the durability and craftsmanship of the era. Over time, Hauz-e-Shamsi has not only served as a crucial water source but also as a testament to the ingenuity of historical urban planning. Located within the Mehrauli Archaeological Park, Hauz-e-Shamsi is surrounded by other significant historical structures, offering visitors a glimpse into Delhi’s rich past. The site’s historical importance is complemented by its serene atmosphere, making it a peaceful spot amidst the bustling city. The surrounding parkland adds to the site’s appeal, providing a pleasant environment for exploration and reflection. Today, Hauz-e-Shamsi stands as a significant heritage site, attracting history enthusiasts and tourists alike. Its preservation is vital for understanding the historical water management systems of medieval Delhi and appreciating the architectural achievements of the period. Visiting Hauz-e-Shamsi provides a unique opportunity to connect with the past and appreciate the historical and cultural depth of Delhi.

A palace called the Jahaz Mahal was built on the eastern edge of the same reservoir during the Lodi dynasty period in the 16th century as a retreat or Inn for use by pilgrims.

The lake was very clean, but the approach road is very hard to traverse if you go inside from the Qutab Minar side. There is a small Mahal and park right next to the lake. Inside it is very peaceful. There are many ducks also in the lake. Nice place to hang around.

A legendary lake excavated by the emperor Shah Iltutmish better known as Altamus in Hindi and Urdu language.

This lake was the only source of fresh water in this area of Delhi. In sixteenth century, the emperor Iltutmish was advised for the excavation of the lake by his dream, when the holy prophet Muhammad sallallahu alaihi wasallam appeared in his dream and was coming across the area riding a horse. The hoof of his horse has been jammed with mud, whereas there was no water to melt the hard and rocky soil of the area. The holy prophet then addressed to the emperor to dig a lake in this area. In the very next morning, the emperor reached at the indicated place and found astonishingly that the footprint of the prophet's horse was still visible clearly and the marked spot was muddy. He went to the source of the mud and found that a subtle flow of water was emerging from the centre of the footprint.

Iltutmish had preserved that muddy soil as a pious emblem of the prophet and...

Shamshi Talab is located in main Meharauli Bazar near Aam Bagh and Jahaz Mahal. Amazed to see pond/talab of this size inside Meharauli. From outside, no one can imagine that inside Meharauli has not only a big pond but also having reasonably a big park. Talab is poorly maintained and it is very dirty as it seems no body is responsible for its maintenance. It is surrounded by many historical monuments and if maintained properly, it has potential to become tourist attractions. Hope Government would look into it. Need of the hour is to preserve history...
