This lake was the only source of fresh water in this area of Delhi. In sixteenth century, the emperor Iltutmish was advised for the excavation of the lake by his dream, when the holy prophet Muhammad sallallahu alaihi wasallam appeared in his dream and was coming across the area riding a horse. The hoof of his horse has been jammed with mud, whereas there was no water to melt the hard and rocky soil of the area. The holy prophet then addressed to the emperor to dig a lake in this area. In the very next morning, the emperor reached at the indicated place and found astonishingly that the footprint of the prophet's horse was still visible clearly and the marked spot was muddy. He went to the source of the mud and found that a subtle flow of water was emerging from the centre of the footprint.

From outside, no one can imagine that inside Meharauli has not only a big pond but also having reasonably a big park. Talab is poorly maintained and it is very dirty as it seems no body is responsible for its maintenance. It is surrounded by many historical monuments and if maintained properly, it has potential to become tourist attractions. Hope Government would look into it.
