One of the premier institutes in the region which aims to skill the youth of today in the art of Handicrafts and Handlooms. The building is spread across two levels - the upper level which houses the museum, and the rooms where classes and manufacturing are in progress, and the lower level which houses the sales counters. If you are looking to buy authentic Sikkimese costumes and accessories with Tibetan touch, this is the place. However the only issue we faced is that the lift in the building was not working and therefore it was difficult for elders in the family to descend the steep stairs to go to the sales section. However, vehicles can access the road in front of both levels, so that takes care of the problem a little bit. I was happy to buy the Sikkimese hat and my wife got a mini bag meant to hold her cellphone - check them out in the photo!

We had been to this emporium during our visit to Gangtok. The handicrafts are lovely and made to keep the traditions and heritage of their region alive. Very spacious and government managed. Prices are decent. Photography is banned inside the emporium. Only cash payments are taken like most places in Gangtok. Opposite the sales emporium there is also a crafts museum in the first floor. You should visit that as well as there is some fine artefacts kept for viewing. A ticket of Rs.10 is charged for entry and no photography is allowed here as well. Ample parking is available here. Make time to visit these places while at Gangtok. Keep clean & stay Green !

So I have been to this place many times and its a institution where the government engages people in different skills and handicrafts by providing training and then employing them. You can see the workers weaving carpets and fabric in the looms or chipping wood in the sculpting workshops on the upper level. There is also a small museum with the various displays for which you need to get a ticket. One can buy various artifacts on the floor below like handmade woven bags and pouches. There are also different fairs and exhibitions held regularly on the grounds. However the place needs a good clean up and proper maintenance like most government offices.

As I understood, this place has a lot of tourists. But frankly speaking there is almost nothing to see. I'm sure Sikkim has a rich cultural and traditional sourses. But what you can see there - 2 or 3 counters with so limited items. Museum with 20 years old heritages - also astonishing. Yes, I had better expectation. I came to handcraft centre to be inspired, and if fact it's opposite :)) And I'm sure it's possible to handle in amazing way. In centre of Singtam in restaurants are better and older cultural exhibits. Why museum / handcraft centre looks so frustrating?! Ah yes, parking is terrible.

We visited this place on Monday but still there was a lot of rush during our visit. Parking area in this place was very crowded. This place depicts the heritage of Sikkim and local traditional dress, food, way of living, jwellery, tradition, farming techniques and much more. You can also get to dress in Sikkim's traditional dress and get a photoshoot. But I felt it was quite dear. Rs 100 per person and that too without print of the foto. We paid rs 250 for a click in the dress. You can visit the museum too.
