DIRECTORATE OF HANDICRAFTS AND HANDLOOM : REVIEW
Location : This is included in the local sight seeing tour of Gangtok , place is a Landmark property, thus it shouldnt be hard to locate by any taxi driver , almost at a distance of 20 mins from MG MARG. Parking is available insdie the building premises, and is paid parking.
Visitor's Review : This is a must visit place, and the right way to visit this place is :
First go to the Art Museum/ Gallery , to see what all artefacts are used from the times of Ancient Sikkim. Gallery is on th first floor and ticket counter on ground floor.
Then visit how these handicrafts/handlooms are being made by the local students , this is a very nice initiative by Sikkim Govt. to sustain its art forms .
In the End ,visit the Sales Emporium . so that you know about artefacts before you buy them .
Prices are bit higher side here , i got a White Tara painting for INR 2500 with bill from here .
Not every item is showcased properly , some are placed on lower drawers which they wont display .
Worth buying items are: PAINTINGS BAMBOO HAIR CLIPS SIKKIM DESIGN MASKS
Prices do not matter to tourists as this emporium is made by SIKKIM GOVERNMENT , thus quality is far better here. ................................................................................................................ TIP : There is also a KHADI GRAM SIKKIM , where you can buy fabrics and other clothings , it is in DEORALI,GANGTOK which is almost 15 minutes form MG MARG , please do visit there too , also keep in mind SATURDAY IS GOVT HOLIDAY , as of FEB 2021 . .................................................................................................................
I would definetly recommend everyone to visit this place .
place is clean , has big clean washrooms .
Also , there is office of POLICE PERMIT CELL , RESTRICTED AREA PERMIT OFFICE. so you can ask your tour operator or visit on your own to get permits .
Well ,this was my personal experience wiht DIRECTORATE OF HANDICRAFTS AND HANDLOOMS, SIKKIM GOVERNMENT , GANGTOK.

Read moreOne of the premier institutes in the region which aims to skill the youth of today in the art of Handicrafts and Handlooms. The building is spread across two levels - the upper level which houses the museum, and the rooms where classes and manufacturing are in progress, and the lower level which houses the sales counters.
If you are looking to buy authentic Sikkimese costumes and accessories with Tibetan touch, this is the place. However the only issue we faced is that the lift in the building was not working and therefore it was difficult for elders in the family to descend the steep stairs to go to the sales section. However, vehicles can access the road in front of both levels, so that takes care of the problem a little bit.
I was happy to buy the Sikkimese hat and my wife got a mini bag meant to hold her cellphone - check them out...
