We travelled by tourist car from Jaipur to Pushkar. It took us three hours to reach there,Pushkar is 14 kms from Ajmer and the drive uphill is beautiful. We crossed “Buddha Pushkar” or old Pushkar and then reached our destination. We searched for the Rajasthan Tourism hotel called “Hotel Sarovar” and checked in there. {Pushkar is one of the eight swayamvyaktha kshetrams and the Lord resides in the Form of water. We turned left as we came out and saw a beautiful temple-SriRama vaikunta temple. I saw that there were two poles on either side of the courtyard. On one pole which was as high as a coconut tree were hung garlands of apples, lemons, dried coconuts and other fruits from a banana stem. The other pole which was of equal height had a kite like triangle on it. We realized that as it was the day after Srijayanthi “Uriyadi” utsavam was to be celebrated. The Moolavar Sri Vaikuntanatha was sitting calmly flanked by the beautiful Sri and Bhumi-devis. The utsava murthis were ready to go out and Krishna was all dressed up to witness the show outside. After prostrating, I came out and had darshan of Lakshmi-Narayana sannidhi and gurus of Utthara Ahobila Muth..
The Utsava Murthies came out to the sound of music and holding two umbrellas and stopped at a vantage point to witness the “Uriyadi”. The activity was centered around the pole holding the goodies. Water was being sprinkled around the spot and two boys with sticks were being drenched. A group of men would lower the plantain stem and the two boys had to hit the hanging goodies. Each time something fell down kids would rush to snatch it. It was a game, which everyone enjoyed and cheered. The utsava murthis were taken in circumbulation and offerings and harathi were made by the priests of the temple. We got shattari at one point and followed the Lord till the deities stopped in front of the pole holding the kite like envelope containing the Prize money. The pole was covered with clay and was wetted continuosly. The contestant had to climb the pole and get the prize. The same boys who hit the goodies were climbing up while resistance was offered by the wet clay. It was an arduous task and the boy climbed steadily by making steps with ropes. It was not easy but the boy made it to the top with patience, skill and sheer stamina. After claiming the prize the coming down was done in a jiffy. The hero and his friends came before the Lord prostrated and stood before the lord and were garlanded by the priests. They were also given dakshina. The show over, everyone dispersed and the Lords were taken into the temple.
Pushkar is famous for its roses. Deities wore rose garlands and shops sold different rose products like “Gulkand” (made with honey and rose petals) and rose water. After shopping, we went searching for the old Rangaji temple. Following signs we made our way to a huge temple in a by lane. The dwarapalakas are made of marble while the Moola murthies are captivating South Indian vigrahas. Venugopala the main deity was flanked by Sri and Bhu and the separate sannidhis for Mahalakshmi and Godha were very impressive. We then took a long walk to the Brahma temple Tired and with aching legs we climbed the flight of stairs to see the four faced Brahma.
6th Sept 2007 We got up by 5.00 AM and made our way outside towards the holy Pushkar –Lake. There are 52 ghats in Pushkar Lake each attributed with unique properties like roop ghat is believed to make one beautiful and so on. We made our way to” Varaha ghat”.With the lake in front and beautiful hills in the backgroud the atmosphere was totally congenial for meditation Then we visited Sri Rama Vaikuntanath temple We sat infront of Sri Ramanuja sannidhi and decorated the gate with the roses and offered the sugar-candy on a piece of leaf. We meditated on Ramauja and made our way back to the hotel. After milk and tea, we left Pushkar by 8.00 AM, after settling the dues at the hotel. (Air cooled room cost was Rs 700 and had 2 beds with attached bathroom.) (The food cooked as we wanted was reasonable. The...
