I went to the Virtual Experiential Museum, at Man Mahal near Dashashwamedh Ghat on April 14, 2025. I was excited to see Varanasi’s culture and history through cool virtual reality stuff, but the visit was really disappointing.

First, they charged me ₹30 for entry when it should’ve been ₹25. Inside, they didn’t have the 3D glasses that are supposed to make the 2 video displays of Varanasi’s ghats look amazing. Without them, the big screens just weren’t actually meaningful. Other things, like the virtual puja or the interactive Ganga dip, sari weaving, or Ramleela puppet show. were either off or broken, so I missed out on those too.

The staff were not nice at all. They didn’t help or explain anything and seemed like they didn’t care. The security guards were even worse, they were rude and rushed me out before 6 PM, not letting me finish the full 90-minute tour. I couldn’t properly see things. They also hurried me out of the rooftop observatory, where I wanted to see old astronomical tools like the Samrat Yantra. I barely got time to take selfies, which was really frustrating.

The museum sounds great with its virtual reality, light shows, and touch screens about Varanasi’s history, but it’s not maintained well. People have been complaining about missing 3D glasses and broken stuff since 2022, and it’s still bad in 2025. Even the nice view of the Ganga river couldn’t make up for how rushed and unwelcoming it felt.

This place was hyped up when it opened in 2019, but now it feels forgotten. For ₹30, I expected something fun and respectful, but it was neither. I’d say skip this museum until they fix it. Varanasi has better places to enjoy its culture, like the ghats, without all this hassle.

Recently, Indian Prime Minister, Mr. Narendra Modi inaugurated the Virtual Experiential Museum (VEM) in Varanasi, established by the National Council of Science Museum (NCSM). The museum is set up inside the centrally protected monument observatory of Man Mahal and at this VEM, people will get see to the work of NCSM, wherein they have displayed several cultural aspects of the city of Varanasi by using latest virtual reality technology.

It surely is going to be an extraordinary experience watching the holy ghats of Varanasi in VEM. Besides, at the VEM, tourists will also get to witness weaving of saris, classical museum, Ram Leela, and beetle shop, among others. Visitors will get to experience all these things with the help of a curved TV screen, paintings, and projectors,...
