Toko Oen - Ice Cream Palace
Address this antique shop on Jalan Jenderal Basuki Rahmat No. 5, Kauman, Klojen, Malang City, East Java 65119.
Toko Oen is a restaurant that has been established since 1930. Toko Oen famous for its special ice cream, it is also called Oen Ice Cream Palace. Beside ice cream, toko Oen also sells Indo-Dutch cuisine with shades of tempo doeloe like fried rice, gado-gado, beef steak and others.
The typical and interesting in this antique shop is the feel of the tempo doeloe like ice ceam is still maintained. Also the maids still use the uniform of tempo doeloe with a suit of white shirts and pants, not to miss the black cap worn by some waiters. The walls around the inside many decorated with pictures depicting Malang tempo doeloe. There is even a pianist who used the old acoustic piano to accompany us to enjoy the culinary and atmosphere of Oen with the songs of the past. We can also spontaneously donate the voice in such an occasion.
Traveling to Malang is identical to visiting the tourist area in Batu city, because in Malang city itself there are only culinary attractions and tempo doeloe buildings, while the natural attractions of the mountains with all its coolness and beauty only owned Batu city.
No wonder the tourist walkers usually stay at the hotel in the city of Malang and not in Batu. Why? Hotels in the city of Batu is much more expensive than hotels in the city of Malang.
The distance from Malang to Batu is only about 30 minutes and can be reached by taxi argo that serves passengers to Batu with the usual rates (not tariff outside town). Very easy to call a taxi in the city of Malang. That's enough call from where we stand on the road, then Taxis come within 10 to 15 minutes. Especially now that online transportation is already available to serve our trips to all around Malang, including to Batu of course.
After enjoying the trip we want, do not forget to enjoy ice cream toko Oen. Visit to Oen shop is a special culinary tour that is quite impressive.
Toko Oen as mentioned above, located near the square of Malang city, precisely at Jalan Jenderal Basuki Rakhmat No. 5 Malang. Just remember cathedral church. Cathedral church is an old church with Gothic architecture located opposite toko Oen.
Prices are set at the toko Oen is not cheap, but also not too expensive for a comfortable and very specific atmosphere that we can enjoy compared with other culinary attractions and all that in order to travel to Malang raya.
I suggest this culinary tour place is very worth to visit if you travel to East Java, especially to Malang raya.
However, I deserve to give 5 stars to the Oen store with all the privileges it has in the world of East Java tourism in particular and...

Initially this shop was founded in the city of Yogya in 1920 by a Chinese of Dutch descent named Liem Gien Nio and the name "Oen" was taken from the name of her husband, Oen Tjok Hok.
This business developed and opened in several cities, for example in Malang in 1930 and then opened a branch in Jakarta in 1934 then Oen's grandfather moved to Semarang. Opened a branch in Semarang in 1936, Toko Oen which is still open until now in 2021 are in Semarang and Malang.
The story of the Toko OEN in the city of Malang. Toko Oen Malang is a favourite and popular place for Dutch and European people until now. Toko Oen is located in the Malang City square area, precisely on Jalan Basuki Rahmat No 5, Malang, East Java.
The Toko Oen in the 1920s used to be the American Warenhuis or "Weissberg" department store. Initially Toko Oen sold various breads, then in 1922 it developed into a cafe and ice cream restaurant. Toko Oen is currently one of the cultural heritages in the city of Malang. Toko Oen's architecture is also built in a colonial style. The building is dominated by white color, and some parts are painted dark green. Until now it's still the same. The menu available there is not only ice cream and bread. There are many menus of food and snacks typical of Malang in the past. The ice cream and bread at Toko Oen are made with family recipes whose processing has traditionally been handed down from generation to generation until now. The ice cream favorite at the Toko Oen is the "Oen Special" ice cream which consists of 3 scoops of banana, chocolate and vanilla ice cream, with Astor biscuit and wafer slices. The bread is filled with cream cheese and white sugar as I ordered there. If you go to Malang city, don't forget to stop by Toko Oen. You will miss the opportunity to get a unique and interesting experience from OEN store. The atmosphere is comfortable and still Dutch style.. Eating there is like being like the Dutch Mister and Lady in the...
Read moreEverytime someone visits the great city of Malang, the name Toko "OEN" will be somewhere on the recommendation list. Renowned for its legendary ice cream (since 1930, to say the least), my curiosity led me to take my family to the establishment, only to find multiple disappointments.
First time coming there, we came at around 7pm, finding the place packed. It took about 20 minutes only to get the menu, with no one seemed to be paying attention. Twenty more minutes wasted to get the menu—most not available—to arrive on your table. Even worse, to get a heavy meal item, you must wait for 50 minutes! To say the ice cream was served correctly will be wrong. Against all common practices, they served the ice cream melting. Disappointed but still curious, we decided to return the next day.
To avoid the items ran out, we came the next day early in the morning, and yes, it was packed. We felt the way the shop was understaffed when there were only about 5 person serving some 30+ tables, and they kept ignoring us. To get the order sheet by ourselves, we were told to sit instead—and when the form came, we were asked to write ourselves (while the servers took the order on other tables). The ice cream arrived, once again, melting, with them filling the tray first before delivering the ice cream, melting most in the process.
To make matters worse, one of the items did not come, and after asking all the way to the cashier, different parts of the shop blamed each other and pointing us to different directions. Even when we have decided to cancel the item, the waiter forced us to have the item back, along with some garbled badmouthing as an unwelcome bonus.
Even when we were settling our bill, the badmouthing continued. They kept insisting that we should have not nag them about the slow service and rather cancel our items if we could not have been patient. When asked whether the service was typically slow when crowded as such, the cashier replied with extreme confidence, "Yes, we do not hire more staffs even when we are loaded up in the holiday season."
We were leaving Toko Oen, for second time, in disappointment. It is not about badmouthing, but it is about telling how a 'legendary' shop can be brought down by bad service. There will be no chance for us returning to this shop, no matter how everyone...
