A great introduction was given to us by the guide. But the place is too small and is worth visiting just once. Basically it's a 15th century franciscan church. There isn't much to see. Nobody else was there when we visited the place. They have preserved some of the carvings and the place had a new roof. The entry to the bell tower is not accessible. The cemetery is accessible to the public but there isn't much to see. If you are very much into historical monuments do visit but if you are going for a casual visit I would not recommend. There are no toilet facilities available at the site. The ticket rates are 5 per adult. Not worth it for a...

Ennis is on the way to Limerick, stopped to see the friary. Small place. They built a roof over the nave so that they can keep the elements from eating away at the sculptures.

Place was a Franciscan friary, then a jail and courthouse. Later a heritage site. Apparently the monk's residence is now the pub next door. They found remains of the old floor during renovations

Worth a visit since we have the OPW heritage card. Spent about 45 mins. The staff will give a short explanation on the place as you enter. There's a picture treasure hunt for kids. If they found everything there's...

Was looking forward to seeing Ennis Friary and use my new OPW heritage card for the first time. Drove 2 hours to go see it only to find on arrival they had completely shut up shop, put the phones on answer machine and not put up any signage either at the Friary or online to advise customers/visitors of their exodus. Perhaps it was a viking raid in which all the staff were captured and told they didn't have to bother working the winter season or inform anyone as such. It may be the wesht of Ireland but it's 2024 not 1284... SHOW SOME...

Ennis Friary has been the town`s focal point since the thirteenth century. It has been a Franciscan household, under the patronage of the O'Brien Kings of Thomond, a courthouse, a jail and, more recently, a Church of Ireland parish church. You can visit the sacristy, an impressive structure with ribbed, barrel-vaulted ceiling, the administrative centre of the friary. Today it is a national monument under the care of the Office of Public Works.

By now, after 12 days in Ireland I am familiar with the Chieftains names that sponsored some of these Catholic sites in many places. A really interesting part of Ireland’s history. All too well is the English later heavy hand to suppress the religion in benefit of themselves. This site is illustrative of the same struggles and represents that era well.
