I was wandering around this shopping centre yesterday afternoon with my little one year old nephew while his mom was getting stuff done. As he was exploring, a woman with a large handbag knocked in to him, completely by accident, but he fell over and got quite upset. To try calm and comfort him, there was a lovely lady who was working there cleaning who brought him a balloon. He was of course delighted with this balloon, and with the intention of putting it back on the lovely Valentine's display, we did let him carry it with him for a little while first, just around the shopping centre. Fast forward maybe five mins as we sit to wait for my nephews mom to be done, the centre's security guard approached us to tell us that the little balloon was actually the property of the centre. I kindly explained what had happened to him and the balloon was just to cheer him up for a few minutes. When I said that a lady working there brought it to him, he replied 'no she didn't it's not hers to give' and he then asked which woman it was by asking 'was it the big heavy one over there?' In absolute disbelief, I responded saying I hadn't taken note of her weight at the time. The security guard proceeded to insist that we could not keep the balloon. Instead of letting him know that we would be returning the balloon I actually stared at him in complete shock and asked was he serious. He continued to say that the centre management would not have allowed the lady to give out the balloon.
This may seem like a dramatic story all about an irrelevant balloon, but the manner of this security guard was appalling. A one year old knocked over and hurt, being cheered up by a balloon for a few mins is all it was. But this security guard appoached us like we were a threat and had done something terrible.
Also, if I was that woman I would be disgusted had I know that a colleague of mine spoke about me in the manner to...
