Castle of Serravalle — Attraction in Bosa

We stopped at a viewpoint after maybe 90 minutes, overlooking the town of Bosa, overlooked by the Castle of Serravalle. It looked a very photogenic place with painted houses, a medieval bridge and castle on the hill. After plugging the phone back in the sat nav switched from driving to walking so after crossing said medieval bridge we were directed along a rutted path and then to a metalled road up the hillside to the castle. There was no obvious parking so we dumped the car as out of the way as we could and had a quick scoot around the place.

The castle is thirteenth century and is most famous for the fourteenth century frescoes in the church of Our Lady de Sos Regnos Altos. This was the first place with obvious tourists there and there were a couple of tour groups as well as various individuals. Hardly crowded but busier than we are used to! We were probably in the castle for 15 minutes and then got back to the car, drove down the hill following the proper instructions and passed a large car park on a proper road. Ah well. Castle of Serravalle has a complete circuit of outer walls and towers that you can climb but the keep and interior buildings...

Oggi, insieme al mio compagno, abbiamo visitato questa fortezza medievale. La mia valutazione non è rivolta al sito in sé, che ha un indiscusso valore culturale e regala una splendida vista su tutta la cittadina di Bosa, bensì a un episodio spiacevole che mi è capitato lungo il percorso per raggiungerlo — e che spero, con questa recensione, possa servire da avvertimento per altri visitatori.

Abbiamo parcheggiato l’auto nello spiazzo indicato da Google Maps, da cui parte un breve sentiero in salita che attraversa verdi campi e conduce al castello in pochi minuti. Durante la salita, mi sono fermata a fotografare un gregge di pecore che pascolava libero in un campo adiacente, separato da quello che sembrava un recinto. Allego alla recensione il breve video realizzato. Improvvisamente, da dietro una collinetta, è comparso un cane bianco, un pastore maremmano, che si è lanciato verso di noi in modo estremamente aggressivo. Ha saltato il recinto, abbaiando furiosamente, e mi ha raggiunta strattonandomi i pantaloni da dietro. Solo le urla del mio compagno sono riuscite ad allontanarlo. Per fortuna, l’episodio si è concluso con solo un grande spavento, un graffio e i pantaloni strappati. Ma poteva andare molto peggio.

Arrivati alla biglietteria del castello, abbiamo riferito l’accaduto e ci è stato detto che sono a conoscenza della presenza di greggi e cani da pastore nella zona, ma che non possono farci nulla. Io però mi chiedo: se al mio posto ci fosse stato un bambino, un altro cane, o se il cane non si fosse limitato a un morso superficiale, cosa sarebbe successo? Tra l’altro io ero nel percorso designato per raggiungere il castello e non ho mai (non mi sarebbe mai venuto in mente) superato il recinto, mi sono solo fermata per una foto, dunque per quanto il cane possa aver avvertito un “pericolo” e tentato di difendere il territorio, non ce n’era alcuna ragione.

Pur comprendendo che la gestione del castello non sia direttamente responsabile di ciò che avviene lungo il sentiero d’accesso, credo sia doveroso segnalare il pericolo. Basterebbe un cartello per avvertire della possibile presenza di cani da guardia lungo il tragitto, così da permettere ai visitatori di decidere consapevolmente se proseguire.

Per fortuna non è successo nulla di grave, ma resta il fatto che la sicurezza in un luogo frequentato da turisti andrebbe considerata...

Nice view spot for sure. The city below spreads out towards the ocean. You can see the river winding through the valley. But the castle itself is fairly run down and the artifacts are not very numerous. You can climb to the top of the tower and get a great view as well.

There are some walls and buttresses that remain. But now as many as some other castles I visited.

There are probably 250 steps going up so it's a little bit of a hike. Also, there's no restroom once you get there. They have a sign that says the restroom is temporarily unavailable but the sign looks like it's about...
