Palazzo del Podestà — Attraction in Rimini

On the beautiful Piazza Cavour next to the Palazzo del Arengo is the beautiful Palazzo del Podestà. It is the most beautiful, important and magnificent building in Piazza Cavour. It was the seat of the Podestà, one of the centers of temporal power of past ages. This imposing Gothic palazzo on the northern edge of pretty Piazza Cavour dates to the 14th century. Structured in full Romanesque-Gothic style with its lateral lines, pointed arches and a series of windows, the Palace is one of the oldest structures overlooking the Piazza Cavour. Il medioevale Palazzo del Podestà, si trova nella suggestiva e ricca di storia Piazza Cavour, nel centro storico di Rimini.

Il Comune di Rimini venne riconosciuto dall’imperatore del Sacro Romano Impero e Re d’Italia Federico Barbarossa (ca. 1122 – 1190) già nella seconda metà del XII secolo, quindi cominciò a esserci l’esigenza di avere un luogo adeguato per le riunioni del Consiglio della Città.

Già agli inizi del XIII secolo venne costruito per uno scopo pubblico, il Palazzo dell’Arengo (Palatium Comunis), in esso venivano gestite le attività amministrative e quelle relative alla giustizia, nella prima metà del XIV secolo, alla sua sinistra venne edificato il Palazzo del Podestà (Palatium Novum), il quale aveva uno scopo privato di dimora del podestà.

La Facciata di questa dimora si presenta su due ordini con una moderna facciata, per quel tempo, salendo una corta scalinata, si arriva ai tre archi a sesto acuto (di tipo gotico), quello centrale funge da portale d’ingresso, nell’ordine superiore vi sono cinque finestrelle con arco a tutto sesto, il palazzo è sormontato da una suggestiva, merlatura ghibellina (a coda di rondine).
