Jonian Dolphin Conservation — Attraction in Taranto

Visiting the Jonian Dolphin Conservancy in Taranto, Puglia, was an absolute highlight of my short trip home this summer. This incredible organization is dedicated to the protection and study of dolphins in the Ionian Sea and is developing a rehabilitation hospital for them near the St. Paolo island - a first in the Mediterranean! Their passion for marine conservation is truly inspiring.

Our initial scheduled trip was cancelled due to bad weather, but when we explained that we would only be in town for a few days the staff was so accomodating and bent over backwards to ensure we could still take the excursion. Our catamaran had guides/marine biologists Nicola and Lia, and from the moment we arrived, the staff was welcoming and knowledgeable, eager to share their expertise and love for dolphins as well as the wider ecosystem. The boat tour itself was a fantastic experience. The guides provided fascinating insights into the behavior and ecology of the dolphins, tuna, sea birds and other inhabitants of the gulf, making the trip both educational and thrilling. We were fortunate to see several dolphins on the hunt and event a mother-baby pair of grampos!

What sets the Jonian Dolphin Conservancy apart is their commitment to public education and sustainable and responsible tourism. They have clearly spent energy and time getting to know not only the animals they defends, but the wider human community that they coexist with. They ensure that their interactions with the dolphins are respectful and non-intrusive, prioritizing the well-being of the animals above all else. It's clear that their work is making a positive impact on the local marine environment and people.

Overall, our visit to the Jonian Dolphin Conservancy was an unforgettable experience that I would highly recommend to anyone visiting Puglia - and to any locals who have yet to experience it! Whether you're a marine enthusiast or simply looking for a unique adventure, this is an opportunity not to be missed. Supporting such a dedicated organization was a privilege, and I left with a deeper appreciation for the beauty and importance of marine life right...

A day that we will always remember and changed our perspective forever.

We spent the day with the association on their boat with our 3 daughters (the youngest is 4), and it was amazing. We could see more dolphins that we could dream of (stripped and buttlenose dolphins), playing and jumping in front of our boat. The association members are passionate and do everything to transmit their love for cetaces' and explain how to protect them. The dolphins were never attracted by food or tracked down. If they seem shy, we just stopped following them but the stripped ones were amazingly curious. Even though everyone else spoke English, Juli was kind enough to translate everything for us, which made the tour as educational as it was impressive.

Just remember that you need to bring your lunch (drinks are provided for) and sunscreen. No need for swimming equipment since it is no allowed to swim with...

Ho trovato questa associazione per caso, cercando con mia moglie su internet qualche meta interessante in Puglia per trascorrere una giornata diversa con i nostri 3 figli (12/8/3 anni). Inizialmente titubanti a far salire su un'imbarcazione una bimba di 3 anni alla sua prima esperienza al largo ci siamo subito ricreduti, la navigazione di circa 5 ore è stata piacevole per tutti i partecipanti ed effettuata in completa sicurezza. Tutti i bimbi sono stati colpiti positivamente da questa esperienza unica nel suo genere. Non c'è visita in acquario o delfinario che possa uguagliare la bellezza di queste creature marine nel loro habitat, poter condividere con loro qualche ora è stato fantastico oltre che educativo. L'eccitazione collettiva percepibile a bordo nel momento dell'avvistamento, la commozione di adulti e bambini quando i delfini hanno accettato la presenza dell'imbarcazione lasciandosi quasi accarezzare a prua saranno ricordi difficili da dimenticare. Il tutto è stato reso possibile da uno staff di ricercatori competenti, disponibili da subito ad ogni necessità e soprattutto rispettosi degli amici marini. Non è stato il classico giro in barca piuttosto una vera e propria visita di cortesia a queste favolose creature che tanto hanno in comune con noi. Trattandosi di una vera e propria esplorazione per un giorno i ricercatori hanno anche dedicato del tempo in navigazione per fornire a tutti molti dettagli riguardo la vita marina, i bambini sono rimasti attenti alle spiegazioni come forse non siamo normalmente abituati a vederli in un contesto casalingo/scolastico. Anche le visite a bordo del catamarano agli allevamenti di mitili (favoloso il "Citro" ovvero lo sbocco in superficie di un fiume sotterraneo) e all'isola di San Paolo ed il passaggio in mare sotto il Castello Aragonese durante il rientro sono state gradite da tutti i partecipanti. Da notare anche l'offerta di squisiti prodotto locali durante la navigazione, il tutto compreso nel prezzo di partecipazione. La mia famiglia consiglia a tutti questa esperienza, ringrazia infinitamente lo staff per averla resa possibile e gli augura di continuare a lavorare a lungo su questo progetto così come stanno facendo.
