If you are in Taranto, you should definitely go see the castle. The castle is on the island which is the old city and pretty much the coolest thing to see there, as the old city itself is rather dilapidated. The entrance is free and you will be joined to a guided tour, which takes place every hour or so. The guided tour is held by a navy person that is assigned to the castle, since the castle itself belongs to the military. The tour is quite informative and takes you through the history and current affairs of the castle. If you liked the visit, do not tip the guide, as they are not allowed to take tips, rather donate to the "friends of the castle" association, which uses the funds for maintenance and repairs. The tour we had was in Italian, French and English and we absolutely loved our guide. Highly recommended

Great start on our sightseeing tour the Officers took you around this strategic port that used to defend the city of Taranto. Our guide spoke good English and was extremely knowledgeable about the castle. The FREE tour lasted around 40 minutes and we got to see the foundations and the history in great detail. There is also a presentation first then the guided tour. There are quite a few steps to ascend and descend but you are warned in advance so you can sit out that part of the tour. Thoroughly recommend the castle, when we left the cruise ship The Spirit we were warmly welcomed on the docks then offered a free bus ride into town and this was our first stop.

It is said you need to make a reservation. To be able to visit the castle with a tour for free. We called and thought we did one for 4pm the following day. When we got there the security said they don't do tours that day because there is the cruise ship in the city. But it was open to the public to go in and explore on their own no guide needed. They gave us a leaflet in English and that was it. Bad communication, at least one person's should speak proper English on have an announcement like "no tours on the days cruise ships dock here, English tours only 4pm any other day" as this is what I assume is the case! 30 mins is enough to stroll around.

Officially called the Castel San Angelo, it was built on the site of older fortifications dating to Greek occupation in the third and fourth centuries BC. The present fort was built for the then-king of Naples, Ferdinand II of Aragon. It was later converted to a prison. Since 1883 the fort has been occupied by the Italian Navy. From 2003 the Navy began restoration and archeological work on the site, removing plasterwork and investigating early fortification work. The fort is open for tours. This is a "must have been seen" castle because it's so photogenic. The story behind it tells us a lot more about the fascinating town Taranto is.

The entrance is free, it is at fixed times, it is a navy museum and the tour is guided by a navy guide. I recommend that you make a reservation so that you don't have emotions, we didn't know and we didn't, but we were still allowed access, I think it's related to the number of visitors at that time. The guide's explanations are interesting and complete, in Italian anyway, but you can still take pictures of the castle, the interior models, the surroundings and enjoy the sunset if you are at the right time.
