I portici di Monte Berici furono pensati già all'inizio del 1600 per poter dare modo ai pellegrini di salire fino al santuario partendo dal centro cittadino, in quando le famose scalette per salire al Santuario con alla base Porta Monte, monumentale "Arco delle scalette" (opera dell'architetto Vicentino Andrea Palladio) erano diventate praticamente impossibili da percorrere in quanto si trovavano in pessime condizioni, fino addirittura di non poterle più usufruire. L'opera fu affidata all'architetto Francesco Muttoni che dopo varie polemiche durate anni e con addirittura un arbitrato (che favoriva la scelta del restauro delle scalette e dei vecchi portici del Palladio, in quanto non esisteva ancora il ponte che da Campo Marzio passava il Retrone) dovette desistere e costruire il primo stralcio di portici che andavano dalla Basilica al Cristo. Dopo 2 anni il primo stralcio fu finito; era 1748. L'altro pezzo, quello che dal Cristo arrivava alla città si conclusero solo nel 1780, con Muttoni che non riuscì mai a vedere l'opera finita data la sua morte. I portici hanno uno sviluppo di 700 metri con 150 arcate, ripartite a gruppi di 10, ognuno dei quali con un breve ripiano a forma di piccola cappella, a simboleggiare i 15 misteri e le Ave Marie...
