Tokyo Onsen Guide: Must-Visit Scenic Hot Spring Ryokans for a Lifetime Experience

At our last night of our 7 day Japan trip, we experienced what felt like was the culmination of our wonderful stay here in japan at various top tier hotels (Ritz Kyoto, Tokyo, Hoshinoya Kyoto) and ryokans (Madoka no Mori). This one really stood on top with its wonderful blend of top amenities (pool, gym, lounge, massage chairs, in-room sauna) with a flawless service and pampering from the moment I made a reservation at this property. I appreciated that the hotel reached out with questions around my stay in order to best accommodate us and extra props for sending a complimentary sedan (Mercedes!) to pick us up from the exact location we had requested. Also our personal attendant who made our breakfast, dinner and our beds were just wonderful. Highlights -Hassle free use of the beautiful private family bath facility; they had automatically reserved a time for us use this and we appreciated every minute of it -The enormous professionalism and warmth exuding from every single staff member we met -The gorgeously decorated Lounge -Our spacious room with a huge backyard and a lounge area -The amazingly delicious food; sashimi was very fresh, pickles deliciously prepared and loved the meat melting in my mouth after a deep in the hot pot! Lowlights -the coffee was available but NOT free! This was probably the first hotel/ryokan where they did not have coffee available in room and only in the lounge where the cost was hefty (~$9 for hot coffee); not cool -no English books/magazines available in the lounge -no English help on how to use the massage chairs -gyms/swimming pool closing early at 7pm Comparing Gora Kadan with Madoka no Mori where we had previously stayed at, we really enjoyed both properties and will highly recommend them both. I'd say our experience overall at Gora was more exceptional with its breathtaking architecture/interior, use of family bath and felt less crowded and rooms more spacious (but also more expensive). The food was also better here and the location too with its proximity to Gora station and Hakone Open-Air museum area. I think where Madoka no Mori stood out was in it's more impressive public bath facility, the more superb massage chairs and their Lily's espresso machines in-room and also freely serving coffees and teas in their lobby/lounge area. Overall, I loved our first set of Ryokan experience and the dreamy memories made at Gora Kadan. I will be back :)

Definitely a worthwhile stay. Our stay was in the Bettei Akatsuki room with 5 adults and 1 baby. From our first entry of the property to the check out, we had staff immediately rush to help with our luggage and check-in. We were greeted with cold tea and sweets while they found our reservation. A staff member was assigned to our room and guided my family to the room and gave a brief room review. All of the facilities info was conveniently in a binder by the phone. Luggage was already carefully placed in our room ready to be used along with robes to change into for bathing and relaxation. Our room came with an outdoor and indoor tub to use any time of the day with a beautiful garden view. Multiple washrooms and the rooms were quite easy to separate for big groups. I generally dislike the traditional flavors of food provided by ryokans and similarly styled hotels but I found the food very flavorful but not overwhelming. All the meals flowed well and it was served to our party in a private room. The check out process was quite nice as well. They brought breakfast to our room and took our orders the night before. We left our luggage in our room as we went to explore the rest of the city. When we returned a taxi was already ordered and ready for our departure. All the staff were exceptional in service and were experts at ensuring that our experience was one to remember. Rooms were cleaned while we dined and flowers were replaced frequently. I noticed staff moving out of the way when we were taking photos of the hotel. A framed photo was provided for us to remember our stay. I highly suggest trying their sake after a quick soak. Afuri mizushikomi Aiyama < Kanagawa >. While 1 day was enough to experience all of it I suggest staying at least 2 nights to try both courses of food which I regret not being able to try (Omakase and their seasonal menu). I look forward to another visit in the coming years.

We had a beautiful, luxurious, and relaxing 2-night stay at Gora Kadan in Feb. The ryokan is located within walking distance of Chokokunomori train station. The site is actually on a villa which used to be a holiday home for a member of the Imperial Family, and so has some very interesting historical architecture around. We stayed in the Kadan rooms (Aoi, Tsubaki, and Ume) which each had their own private onsen, which was lovely to use. The views outside the rooms were picturesque and lovely. Inside the rooms was very traditional with modern facilities, and I was very impressed with the quality of toiletries items! Common areas such as the salon and the grand bath/onsen were very clean and well-maintained. The salon has massage chairs you can use and also has a nice view overlooking the gardens and Mount Hakone. We were served breakfast and dinner and opted for kaiseki style. The food exceeded expectations - everything was fresh and the flavors were delicious. One of our party was vegetarian. The kitchen was able to adjust their meals accordingly to prepare vegetarian kaiseki dinners and breakfasts without sacrificing quality. Customer service was exceptional. Special thanks to Ryo-san and Yuta-san for taking care of us during our stay. The ryokan also offered complimentary chauffeur rides to the train station upon checkout which we appreciated very much. The next time we visit Hakone, we will definitely stay here again!

Such an amazing experience staying at Gora Kadan, it was the highlight of our trip (and maybe my favorite place I've been in my 3 trips to Japan). It's pricey but SUCH an amazing experience it was so worth it. We stayed in the "Aoi" annex room, which was utterly magical; the garden was gorgeous and the bath was just perfect. The bath could very comfortably fit two adults with a lot of room to stretch out and move around, or three if you didn't mind bumping legs occasionally. Service was incredible, all the staff were so great and our room attendant Maho was so sweet and helpful! My friend and I are both heavily tattooed and thus not allowed in the shared public baths, however one person in our group was able to enjoy the main baths, and said they were amazing as well. Somehow when our booking dates changed the information about dietary restrictions got lost and I didn't see their email until the night before (usually they only make accomodations if you give them 24+ hours notice) but they were still able to make us a lovely vegan / vegetarian dinner and breakfast. The only small negative was there was a slight funky smell to the tatami on one half of the bedroom, and the steam shower also had a bit of a smell when it first turned on but that went away very quickly. There's a tram station nearby, and it was fairly easy to get to all of the local attractions either via the train or taxi.

Words can’t properly expressed how much me and my husband appreciated spending the lovely 3 nights in Gora Kadan. It is so healing and fulfilling both physically and mentally, to watch the sunrise, emerge into the sound of nature with water, train, winds and rainfall and to be able to enjoy the sunlight shed into the balcony and room is really beyond words. Service was also top notch, worth all the titles and expectations. You can feel the gentleness, how they care and respect their guests with all the details. Food was also unforgettable, me and my husband are Japanese food lovers, with continuous 3 nights of kensaki meals without any repeat and still full of wonder really brought our stay to another level. If budget allows, the in-room Shiatsu massage is highly recommended. The therapist had the best skill I ever had and my husband who doesn’t like massage agreed too. Overall, we really enjoyed and loved the stays, it left us such an unforgettable memory that we already hoped to visit again one day.
