We got to stay here for a couple days in early November and it was beautiful. Enough of the staff spoke English that it was easy to check in. Navigating the space is interesting, but I really like that it has a unique layout. The outdoor area is so peaceful. We got to enjoy the private Onsen by just going in one of the two rooms and flipping the sign to occupied and locking the door. They are big, you could easily have a group of 6 in there. They just ask you only use the room for 30 min at the time to allow others a chance but it wasn’t an issue. 30 min is plenty time in that hot water. I loved being able to go to meals or hang out in the lounge in the yukata they provided. The buffet breakfast and dinner were great. They have nice signs explaining in English what things are and how to eat them. I was nervous to do a super traditional ryokan because I don’t k ow that I would enjoy the food, despite finding it visually stunning. This food was all Japanese but still great for my Western tastes. Alcohol is included with dinner which was just a station set at the buffet with bottles of Japanese whiskey, sake, and other beverages where you can just fix yourself a drink like you are at a friends house. They also have free post dinner drinks and snacks after dinner in the lounge, with beer, Japanese whiskey, and plum wine. The place itself is beautiful and relaxing with to be in. We had a room with two beds, and it’s own bathroom, and a couch and tv. Plenty of room and a great view. They provide airfreshner and purifier which helps. I noticed at night we would get some sulfur smell but …you are in a hot spring area. We were pretty close to a conbini and lots of attractions. Highly recommend!

Overall, the location is great, the staff are great and the services including snacks and drinks are also great. My only gripe, which is a HUGE one, can be seen in the following photos. We are currently here on a 3 night stay and are loving getting out to explore during the days with loads to see and do. The problem is the room. On our first night as a group of 5, I am in a room with my 2 children, and my wife "was" in the room next door with her mum After being out all day and returning to the room in the afternoon after enjoying conversations with fellow travellers and also the free alcohol session, we were met with a rather nasty pungent smell in the room. Hoping it would get better, my kids soon fell asleep, leaving me wide awake with a putrid awful smell in the room. So bad, that in fact I barely slept the entire night due to not being able to switch off from it or find the source while looking in the dark so as not to wake the kids. Upon morning, the air con had stopped, so was switched back on, meaning the smell got worse. Upon closer inspection, the air vents where the air blows out from was THE WORST THICKEST AND MOST AMOUNT OF MOULD GROWING I HAVE EVER SEEN IN MY ENTIRE LIFE, in any of the locations I have ever stayed in. See photos below. Upon mentioning to the staff at the front desk, all that was offered was a very simple apology. We then demanded to be changed rooms due to the disgustingly unhealthy find in the vents. We have since been moved to a new room, but again, upon entering the first thing I did was look up to the vents to be greeted with yet another awful sight. Photos of the second room also can be seen. Completely full of mould which is then being sent throughout the room to be breathed in while you sleep. And there is always a smell...,.. Upon mentioning that it's just not good enough and hugely unhealthy, to then be told that they are cleaned twice a year! Looking at the photos, it looks as though they have NEVER been cleaned. Simply not good enough and something that everyone staying should be looking at when entering their rooms.

This was the worst of the hotels I stayed in while in Japan. I was so disappointed. The tiny business hotels I stayed in were better than this one meant for relaxing. The price of the hotel is not cheap, but everything about the rooms, facilities, and service is cheap. The hotel is new, but it feels decades old. Room: When I walked in, I was greeted with a stink of must. The room is big but most space is not used. They didn’t even provide water for the refrigerator. The bathroom was dirty. And the view? A construction site. Like I said, tiny business hotels are cheaper and better in every regard here. Facilities: -The outdoor area looks nice, but is spoiled by loud kids running around. Can’t relax there. -The indoor “snack” area again, looks nice. But I guess they don’t turn the A/C on there? It had to be 30+ degrees celsius in there, unbearable to stay. -Tattoos aren’t allowed in the public bath, but this is not stated on their website :) Food: Basic Japanese-style breakfast buffet. It was fine, not much to say about it. Hotels act like they’re being convenient when they provide things at a central location, but they’re actually just being cheap by not providing it in your room. I can’t believe I came all the way to Hakone to stay here. Next time, I’ll just stay in Tokyo.

We are so glad that we stayed in Gora Yutowa hotel as our first visit to Hakone. It’s a true 5 star ⭐️ experience if you prefer modern design, big open space, and delicious breakfast. The location is super close to the Gora station, only 3 min walk, 5 min walk to Lawson. The stuff are all friendly and attentive which makes you feel at home. We enjoy the most was the hotel library and the self-service Coffee/Tea bar. In the evening there was free mini cocktail corner for the guests to enjoy the making of your own drinks. The public hot spring is nice and clean. While the outdoor foot onsen in the court yard has a more romantic atmosphere, with bonfire and under the stars. Our room on 5th floor is just spectacular, a simple modern Japanese style twin room. But it’s quite big with a huge window facing East and the mountain, we were able to see the boats on Sagami Bay and, watching the sunrise from the room. Also the interior of the hotel is beautifully decorated with the natural pattern carpet, calming timber wall and marble stairs. We stayed two nights and enjoyed delicious breakfast every morning in the Mountain View hotel restaurant. We absolutely adore Hotel Yutowa and, it’s the go to hotel for our second visit to Hakone!

One of our highlights of our trip was this Hakone Yutowa. Starting from a seamless check in experience to clean well equipped spacious room with a jaw dropping view, to the luxurious gourmet buffet for dinner and breakfast, to the easily accessible private baths (2, first come first served for 30 minutes- we never waited for one), to the open snack/beer stations; it was by far the best place we stayed during our trip and really offered us a cherished memory. It may not be the most traditional ryokan experience (not the traditional tatami style room, buffet style dinner/breakfast), but having been to a traditional one previously, this one really hit the spot for us as it was the perfect mix of traditional ryokan experience enhanced with some modern/convenient tweaks to fully enjoy the full experience. It was definitely not the cheapest stay however we felt that the quality matched the price very well (and definitely far from being on the pricier sides of Ryokans in Hakone). It is about 30-40min away from the Hakone station by the Hakone Tozan train which offers beautiful views of the mountain (about 5-10 minutes walk from Gora station). Thank you for the experience!
