The famous writer Ryotaro Shiba once said something like “all those important players from Meiji Restoration to Russo-Japanese War were actually neighbors.” Take stroll around the area. You will find many statues and monuments like this one. Saigo Takamori was arguably the brightest star of that time. His story with childhood friend, comrade in arms, and eventually enemy, Okubo Toshimichi was such a poetic Shakespearean tragedy. I highly recommend watching a few episodes of either Atsuhime or Segodon. It will make your trip so much more enjoyable...
