Harimayabashi — Attraction in Kochi

A beautiful little bridge filled with so much history. It's almost as if you are taken back in time. As you walk across, on the one side you can look at a very calm and serene setting of a crystal clear little river surrounded by greenery and on the other side the bustling road where older taxis, trams and buses, mixed in with newer cars, go back and forth. The bridge has a certain romance to it about forbidden love and it's tragic ending, but the best part is actually walking past the bridge through the shops towards the main shopping center of Kochi. There's some water and when I was there some really pretty blooming cherry trees dropping their blooms into the water below. A little gazebo was there too. It is just a little, rather short vermilion wooden bridge. The bridge tells the sad story of a love affair between a monk, Junshin and a woman, Ouma. They used to have secret meetings even though the monk's sect prohibited such relationships. Their affair was discovered when someone saw Junshin buying a hairpin at a shop near the bridge.
