Sekkatei (夕佳亭 – Kyoto, Japan)

Sekkatei (夕佳亭) is a hidden gem nestled within the grounds of the famed Kōdai-ji Temple (高台寺) in Kyoto. This elegant teahouse offers not only historical and architectural beauty but also one of the most serene sunset views in the Higashiyama district — which is reflected in its name: “Sekkatei” means “Pavilion of Beautiful Evening Glow.”

Originally constructed in the early Edo period and later restored, Sekkatei is designed in the traditional sukiya-zukuri style, harmonizing simplicity and refinement. The building is modest in scale, made from natural materials like wood and bamboo, yet every detail reflects careful craftsmanship. The open veranda looks out onto Kyoto’s rooftops and hills, making it an ideal spot to quietly reflect and enjoy nature.

Though access may be limited depending on the season or special events, visitors to Kōdai-ji can usually view Sekkatei from the garden path. It’s especially enchanting in autumn, when the maple leaves frame the view with vivid reds and golds.

Tip: Visit in the late afternoon to catch the soft light and calming atmosphere. Sekkatei isn’t a place for fast sightseeing — it’s for slowing down, breathing in Kyoto’s historic charm, and watching the sun fade gently...
